An account executive for a copy company contends that the Yuba City Unified School District is paying more for used copy machines that it would for new ones.

"I don't understand it," Leon Ellis said. "It doesn't make any sense to me."

Baldev Johal, deputy superintendent for business, said Thursday that Ellis has sought the school district to switch to copy machines from the company he represents and "is not a disinterested party."

"We are going through a detailed review of every copy machine at every single school," said Johal.

Johal said he had asked that copy-related matters be removed from the school board agenda Tuesday to await the report he will present to trustees.

The deputy superintendent said he met last week with Ellis for two hours about the copy issue.

"I'm not sure where Leon is getting his numbers from," Johal said.

Ellis, whose daughter attends Lincrest Elementary, spoke Tuesday to school district trustees about copying costs and said they need "to be audited by somebody independently."

Trustee Mary Henson said Ellis has brought up some good points and that, "We all have questions."

Ellis has earlier cited what he said is a wide range in the monthly lease payments Yuba City Unified makes for the same machines. Tierra Buena Elementary pays $286 a month while Butte Vista lease payments are $550, Ellis has said.

Johal has said that the school district of more than 12,000 students makes about a million copies each month when school is in session.
