NORWALK, Conn., Sep 05, 2013 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- The Department of Homeland Security has awarded Xerox a three-year, $16 million contract to provide records digitization services for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The company will provide the services at a Xerox facility designed specifically for securely managing government records.
As part of the contract, Xerox will scan and digitize immigration records producing more than 25 million images a year. The digitized records will be transferred into the federal government's Enterprise Document Management System and be used for a variety of immigration purposes.
"The USCIS administers a tremendous volume of documents on a daily basis," said Bill Cornelius, vice president, Xerox Federal Solutions.
Xerox is renovating a vacant facility in Barbourville, Kentucky to be compliant with the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) Facility Standards for Temporary Records Storage Facilities. This will enable Xerox to meet stringent government security requirements for handling official documentation and records. The NARA-compliant building will be one of less than two dozen NARA-approved commercial facilities like it in the country.
Xerox will create 50 new jobs in the area, working closely with a local workforce organization, the KCEOC Community Action Partnership (KCEOC), to help with recruiting and training services for the new hires.
"The Xerox facility in Barbourville breathes new life into an area of Kentucky that will really benefit from the employment and peripheral business opportunities that typically come with a facility like this," said Paul Dole, president and CEO, KCEOC.
The new Xerox facility, currently under renovation, is scheduled to open before the end of the year.
