Xerox Corporation scientists have developed a prototype "smart document" review system featuring a large touch-sensitive table on which users can sort documents by moving their fingers across the tabletop screen.
The prototype is similar to the screens on smartphones or tablet devices, but is more than 150 times larger, allowing several people to work together.
The new document review technology is designed to help users gather and group together similar documents quickly. The interface is designed to allow users to put documents side-by-side for comparison, scaled up or down or piled in a corner of the table.
The system is also designed to automatically sort documents according to relevance. By pointing to necessary documents, the user ‘teaches' the system what information is important. The system can then use this knowledge to automatically categorise and sort millions of documents in a fraction of the time it takes to do so manually.
The new technology is designed to improve the document review process and is targeted at document-intensive industries such as insurance, pharmaceutical, medical, financial and legal.
"When you consider the vast number of documents involved in litigation, patent searching, government security and intelligence analyst reports, it's easy to understand how some review efforts involve millions of documents," said Dan Smith, general manager for Integrated Marketing, Xerox, MEA (DMO). "We believe that a tool like this will have a major impact on the cost, accuracy and speed of document review."
