Print management solution eliminates waste, reduces cost

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Nov. 05, 2003 -- The University of Rochester is winning the battle against skyrocketing costs associated with student printing, with a networked technology system from Xerox Corporation's (NYSE: XRX) Global Services division and business partner Pharos Systems.
The system, called Student Access Management, enables the university to eliminate print waste and lower costs while providing a faster, easier and more efficient method for printing documents.

Following the move of many of the University of Rochester's course materials online, students were printing more than 400,000 pages monthly with little regard to waste, costing the university about $20,000 a month on equipment maintenance, replacement purchases and supplies.

The Student Access Management system, a combination of software and services, now provides network access to Xerox printers via a student ID card. Students are given a designated print allotment on their account, and charges are automatically deducted when the card is used. The system enables the university to maintain the cost of running the equipment and addresses the previous concerns from students - delayed queues for printers, lost documentation and broken equipment from overuse.

"Historically, almost one-third of documents from library printers were wasted - either discarded immediately or not even retrieved," said Ron Dow, dean of libraries, University of Rochester. "The main goal of implementing Student Access Management was to upgrade an obsolete printing system and provide students with improved printing service."

"Xerox Global Services is helping universities reduce unnecessary costs, while increasing the overall quality of existing technology systems," said Craig Haskins, vice president, Public Sector, Xerox Global Services. "Xerox continues to meet those goals by delivering document management solutions that address the unique challenges facing higher educational institutions."

Xerox Global Services works as a strategic partner with colleges and universities, identifying new ways to generate revenue, reduce costs and spearhead technology innovation.

Pharos Systems is the world leader in output resource management solutions and has been solving customer print problems for 11 years.

The University of Rochester, established in 1850, is a private, coeducational institution that ranks among the most highly regarded universities in the country. A member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, the University of Rochester offers degree programs at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels, as well as in several professional disciplines.
