Xerox cutting about 800 more U.S. jobs
Wednesday December 3, 5:46 pm ET
ROCHESTER, New York (AP) -- Xerox Corp. is eliminating about 800 jobs in the United States, including 200 in Rochester as part of a long-term effort to streamline operations.
The Stamford, Connecticut-based office equipment company said Wednesday the cuts in the engineering, administrative, clerical and other nonunion ranks will be carried out through the end of next week.
Over the last two years, Xerox has slashed its worldwide payroll by about a third to 62,800 at the end of September. It employs about 8,900 people in the Rochester area, most of them at its manufacturing hub in the suburb of Webster.
"We're continuing to identify cost-reduction opportunities," spokeswoman Christa Carone said. "We have certainly done all the heavy lifting" in recent years, she said. "Our approach now is to react and adapt to business conditions to stay competitive."
While Xerox has struggled in recent years, it has carried out a $1 billion-plus overhaul. Posting an 18 percent jump in third-quarter profit, the company cited growing sales of color printers and multifunction devices plus improvements in developing markets.
Xerox shares rose 21 cents to close at $12.21 Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange.
