WEEKEND MFP INDUSTRY NOTES

The following is a quick review of copier/MFP industry news from industry publications.


- Street pricing seen in the print for pay market:
o Canon imagePRESS C7000VP w/paper deck/booklet-maker/Fiery/stacker for $223,300.00 with color clicks $ 0.051 and b/w clicks at $0.01. Single click 11”x17”, with minimum monthly volume commitment of 100,000/mo for color. This also includes a Canon promotion for 600,000 free color clicks.
o Xerox DocuColor 242 w/Creo/booklet-maker for $31,400.00. Color clicks at $0.059 and $0.0129 for b/w. Single click 11”x17”.
o Used Xerox DocuColor 240 w/Fiery (no finisher) for $20,200.00. Color clicks @ $0.0597 and $0.0129 for b/w. Single click 11”x17”
o Xerox Nuvera EA 120 w/finisher for $61,200.00 with b/w clicks @ $0.00476. Single click 11”x17”.
o Canon imageRUNNER 7095 w/Fiery/bookletmaker/cover inserter for $28,500.00 with b/w clicks @ $0.0039. Single click 11”x17”.

- Canon gets bad press about data security: Indiana University announced it has discovered a data security problem called a “vulnerability to FTP bounce attack”, allowing remote attackers to redirect traffic to other sites. Models affected include:
o IR-2230, 2830, 3530, 3025, 3030, 3035, 3045, 2270, 2870, 3570, 4570, 5070, 5570, 6570
o IR-5050, 5055, 5065, 5075, 8070, 85+, 9070, 105+, 7086, 7095 & 7105
o IR-C3220, C2620, C2880, C3380, C2550, C4080, C4580, C5180, C5165, C3170, C5800, C6800, C5870, C6870, C5058, C5068, C7000CP, C1

- Canon announced that its MFPs will connect to Sepialine Argos Print/Copy Accounting Solution Software, and can be accessed using the copier’s LCD display via Canon’s MEAP technology.

- Canon announced it is opening up a research & development center in Noida, India that will employ up to 200 workers.

- Xerox announced that Axacore FaxAgent software is now compatible with selected Xerox WorkCentre MFPs.

- Xerox paid its CEO, Anne Mulcahy, a total of $12.8 million in 2007. She started with the company in 1976 as a down the street sales rep.

- Hewlett Packard launched the LaserJet P4515 offering:
o Base MSRP of $1599.00
o Made by Canon
o Top speed of 62ppm b/w laser printing (no color)
o Letter or legal size only (no 11”x17”)
o Optional extended warranties do NOT include supplies

- Hewlett Packard launched two new b/w laser copiers, the M9040mfp and M9050mfp featuring:
o Made by Canon
o 40ppm (9040) or 50ppm (9050)
o 9040 has base MSRP of $9999.00 while 9050 has base MSRP of $12,499.00
o Up to 11”x17” paper handling
o Finishing options include:
 8 bin mailbox
 Stapling finisher for $2020.00
 Booklet maker finisher for $2420.00
o Optional fax board
o Optional extended warranties do NOT include supplies
o Black toner cartridge sells for $269.99 each with yield of 30,000 pages based on 5% coverage per page

- Hewlett Packard announced it will launch a new ad campaign to boost printer sales. The two theme/taglines are; “What Do You Have To Say?” and “Alternative Thinking About Printing” Planned spend is $300 million in 2008.

- Canon gives HP more color laser copiers to sell: Hewlett Packard launched the Color LaserJet CM6030mfp (base MSRP of $7999) & CM6040mfp ($10,899) models featuring:
o Like other models, this is actually made by Canon (similar to engine used in Canon imageRUNNER C4080)
o 30ppm (6030mfp) or 40ppm (6040mfp) top speed color or b/w
o 600x600dpi (runs at top speed) or 600x1200dpi (runs at half speed)(advertised as 4800dpi like quality with HP imageREt)
o 2/4 bits per pixel (not 8 bits per pixel)
o Uses HP ColorSphere toner (made by Canon, and is pulverized toner infused with wax)
o 25%-200% zoom only as a copier
o Pantone certified
o Max duty cycle of 200K/month (based on 5% b/w pages)
o Recommended maximum monthly volume of 8,000 per month in color
o Weighs 319 pounds
o Monochrome touch screen LCD display (does not tilt or swivel)
o Auto duplex standard up to 58lb. bond
o Up to 12”x36” paper using the bypass, up to 11”x17” paper using paper drawers
o 100 sheet stack bypass, holds up to 58lb. bond

- Hewlett Packard also launched a print only version of the Color LaserJet CM6040mfp and named it the Color LaserJet CP6015, with base MSRP of $4199.00.

- Toshiba announced the promotions of several employees in its copier division effective April 1, 2008:
o Steve Rhorer to vice president and general manager
o Michael Mathé to vice president and general manager
o Toshihiko Minato as deputy chief operating officer
o Nobuo Fukazawa as assistant chairman and chief information officer (while retaining his current position as senior vice president, Strategic Business Planning)
o Steve Tungate as vice president and general manager, Strategic Business Planning and Supply Chain Management
o Denise O’Donnell as vice president of Information Technology
o Sue Wilson as vice president, Supply Chain Management.

- Toshiba announced that Stargel Office Solutions of Houston, TX is it Dealer of the Year for 2007.

- IKON is now selling Kodak high speed desktop scanners as part of its solutions portfolio. The company also predicted that its total revenues would grow only by 1% during the last quarter.

- Oce’ reported that during the first quarter of 2008, its total revenue decreased 3.7%.

- PostNet, with 400 print for pay locations in North America, announced it will install EFI Digital StoreFront, so that its store can accept digital print jobs over its website.

- Sharp announced it will offer optional EFI Fiery print controllers for its b/w production print models, as an alternative to its current generic print controller offering.

- Kodak announced it has purchased Intermate Inc. of Birkerod, Denmark. Intermate makes devices that allow production print engines to be able to connect to IBM AS400, or other computers that generate Intelligent Printer Data Stream (IPDS) language.

- In a study conducted by InfoTrends, end users were asked if they would trust a software program to automatically order supplies for their printer. 67% said no way.

- Sharp announced another vendor that will work with its embedded platform, known as OSA. OmTool’s AccuRoute will now be able to be accessed through a Sharp MFP’s color LCD control panel.

- Xerox was forced to pay out $12 million to 1,100 former employees as part of a race discrimination lawsuit.

- X-Rite announced that it will cut $23 million from its operating expenses due to “general turmoil in the economy”.

- Canon, in a Japanese newspaper article, admitted it is concerned about the future of its business with Hewlett Packard. Currently, Canon enjoys a huge source of revenue from HP, as it makes all the HP laser printers and the toner cartridges that go with them. HP is planning on replacing laser technology with inkjet engines, which it makes on its own, and does not need to source them from Canon. (another reason why Canon is spending vast sums of money in an attempt to enter the flat screen HDTV market)

- Canon announced it has sold an imagePRESS C7000VP production color system to UPrinting, a print for pay shop in west Los Angeles, CA.

- A group of 18 Japanese office equipment makers announced they are starting a data security ratings group, called “I.S. Rating”.

- A former Xerox scientist, Werner Haas, passed away at 79 years old. After starting with the company in 1966, he helped develop advancements in liquid crystal displays and invention of laser printer.

- Hewlett Packard announced that the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute purchased a HP Edgeline CM8060 color inkjet copier. It was sold by NewCal, a HP/Canon dealer founded in 1991 by two former Kodak employees, Steve Tarpley & Ken Wilkens.

- Ricoh announced that is new GlobalScanTM 3.1 option for its MFPs, is powered by Notable Solutions Inc. (NSi) AutoStore document management program.
- Konica Minolta’s technology is being used in the creation of popular Hollywood movies, including; “The Golden Compass”, “Harry Potter” and “Narnia”. The Konica Minolta VI-910, a 3D scanner, was used to help create the lifelike computer generated animals in the movies.

- Canon announced it is now offering print-only version of some of its color copiers. The imageRUNNER LBP5975 and 5970 models start at $3399, and offer optional paper drawers and finishers to make them floor standing. Print speeds are 30ppm color and 31ppm b/w.

- Canon also launched two more color copiers, the imageRUNNER C3080 and C3480 featuring:
o based on engine used in Canon imageRUNNER C3200 series
o 4 bits per pixel (not 8 bits per pixel)
o Up to 1200x1200dpi
o Paper path goes through middle of engine, and underneath drums
o C3480 offers 34ppm b/w and 30ppm color
o C3080 offers 30ppm b/w and 28ppm color
o Same finishing and paper options as other current models
o Optional fax
o Optional Universal Send for scanning to e-mail
o Either generic or Fiery print controllers
o Base MSRPs of $11,000 for C3480 and $9000 for C3080

- Canon announced pricing for the optional EFI Fiery print controllers for its mid-range color MFPs:
o ColorPASS GX200 external unit for $16,950.00
o imagePASS H1 embedded unit for $4950.00
