Warning! As of Sunday night, January 11, 2004, a dangerous email is making its way onto Americans' computers. This email claims to be from Microsoft, but in reality the email address has been faked to make it appear that windowsupdate@microsoft.com is the sender. Attached to this fraudulent email is a dangerous file that, when opened, will install the "Xombe" Trojan on your computer. A Trojan is a nefarious program that is designed to imbed itself inside your computer and open a back door that will allow your computer to be accessed by internet hackers. The Trojan allows these hackers to take control of your machine and to:
· Access your email account to send spam emails from your computer.
· Access your passwords, credit card numbers, or other private information.
· Use your computer as a drone to attack websites in an effort to wreak havoc on them, and to cause a slowdown of global internet activity.
The email message you should be wary of contains text similar to this:
"Windows Update has determined that you are running a beta version of Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1)," the message's text reads in part. "To help improve the stability of your computer, Microsoft recommends that you remove the beta version of Windows XP SP1 and re-install Windows XP SP1."
The message then urges the user to run the winxp_sp1.exe attachment to re-install SP1, and recommends that anti-virus software be disabled, as it "may interfere with the installation."
