Ricoh Releases Variable Print Solution ricohaficio
(43/M/Highlands, NJ) 5/8/01 5:50 pm
ricoh Australia has launched DOT (Document Output Technology), a unique solution for printing host system data on any network printing device.

"DOT is the first solution that will accept any data from any host applications or database, format it to industry standard file types and output it on any network connected laser printer". said Allan Hodges, Business Solution Manager for Ricoh Australia.

Ricoh DOT is a variable data output manager that acts as middleware between applications on the network and output devices. Applications direct their output to the DOT server which converts it to Postscript, PCL or GDI, adds graphics, forms and inteligence and then prints onto anjy attached device, automatically, in real time.

"Now users can print invoices, payrolls or any variable data anywhere on their WAN. This eliminates the need for three part stationary, dedicated line printers or centralized printing of business documents. With one piece of middleware software we have eliminated the problems inherent in complex, multi-host WAN's.

Hodges explained the intelligent capabilities of the DOT. "DOT not only adds forms and graphics to provide excellent looking looking output to documents, it also can manipulate the host data without changing the host application," he said.

"This can save many months of development time and allow users to instantly change the messages they send to their clients. For example, DOT can look at the contents of an invoice to determine which products have been purchased then automatically include four color advertisments for value added products targetedat that client. Doinfg these things in the host environment is often exspensive and slow."

Ricoh DOT has undergone exstensive international Beta test program proving that one PC spooler can control 512 network connected printers and transform up to 5,000 pages of data per minute. Transformations include the addition of data generated graphs, barcodes, MICR coding, color components and the insertion of elements from the table look ups.

"perhaps one of the best uses for DOT is to completely standardise and organisation's outputs. Now the business documents they print, email or put on the web can all have the same company look and feel. Output can be controlled to ensure the needs of legislation and corporate identity are met simply, everywhere in the organisation, with changes made easily and quickly in a WYSIWYG environment.

Good Morning- Love the new board

I just went to the Ricoh rollout on DOT. Anybody that is familiar with variable data might remember Paris, it still is running in some places, anyhow this is like the upgraded version of that. Ricoh is slowly rolling this out to their dealers starting on the west-coast, we got lucky they were in Chicago and we short stop them. It is about a $10,000 investment to sign up for their program. Our DSM is emailing us the PDF of the rollout this week, I will try and get it posted as soon as I can. If anybody has any questions let me know.
