University saves A$1M a year with Managed Print Services

A university in Australia has cut costs and increased the environmental sustainability of its printing operations by outsourcing its printing needs.

Despite an increase of 50 per cent in student enrolment figures over the last three years, the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) has reported savings of A$1 million in total printing costs and the rationalisation of its printing fleet by over 60 per cent by employing Managed Print Services (MPS).

Within the first 12 months, the university managed a “47% reduction in total printing costs and saved $1 million,” said Dr. Colin Adrian, Chief Executive of CIT. “We expect ongoing savings of A$1 million per annum over the next four years.”

Under CIT’s new initiative - a partnership with Fuji Xerox - its printer fleet was consolidated and reduced from 494 to 199 devices. Printers were also relocated from multiple student labs to the PrintCentre, allowing CIT to cut costs through reduced floor space.

The streamlining of the printing infrastructure of CIT has cut its paper use by lessening unnecessary printing, making it more environmentally-friendly.

“MPS is a response to management, business practices and the green drive within government, and not merely a hardware issue,” said Masaki Okano, Corporate Vice-President and President of Fuji Xerox Global Services. “It goes far beyond ROI concerns - optimisation of print services allows for a renewed focus on customer management.”

Prior to working with Fuji Xerox in 2008, CIT operated its own printing centre, with its departments managing their individual printing requirements.
