We have an accounting firm that uses Filecabinet CS (creative solutions). They used to have an old Toshiba that scanned to the hard drive of the MFP and there was a TWAIN driver that allowed users to pull the documents off of the hard drive.
This allowed them to perform functions within the application that were not available when importing from folder (like splitting a multi-page TIFF). They really liked this feature and couldn't see living without it. Reminds me of some of the benefits of Scan Router over SMB (not that there are a lot, but there definitely are some). At the time they went to replace this I didn't have a solution and told them so. Sometime after they bought a Sharp. They are now looking for an additional copier for the same purpose...and, trying to get out of their lease on the Sharp that doesn't do what the salesperson promised them it would.
Since then, I have found a solution that allows them to do what they want with the Savin copier we are recommending (and the Sharp if they decide they don't want to stick it to the other vendor which I've told them is totally up to them). UniTWAIN www.terminalwork.com/unitwain allows users to use a TWAIN driver to "scan" documents from a folder, camera, and more. This is also a nice tool to use if you don't have a scanner but need to test some things. I had some issues getting it to work in a terminal server environment like theirs, but have managed to work through it. Some other tools I used were Irfanview and GIMP to isolate scanning problems to Filecabinet CS and have other scanning applications for testing.
I'm hoping thinking outside of the box will help us on this one and that maybe someone else can benefit.
