Three teachers receive INSPIRE: Lexmark’s Teaching Award
LEXINGTON, Ky., Jan. 20, 2012 – Lexmark International, Inc. (NYSE: LXK) has honored the first three recipients of INSPIRE: Lexmark’s Teaching Award. The program recognizes outstanding Central Kentucky area middle and high school science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) teachers.
Lexmark representatives surprised the following teachers with INSPIRE awards, presented in front of peers and students at their schools:
• Tina Cox, a math teacher at Lexington Traditional Magnet School in Lexington, Ky.
• Joy Cox, a science and math teacher at KORE Academy in Lexington, Ky.
• Jay Cloud, a technology education teacher at Kentucky School for the Deaf in Danville, Ky.
Tina Cox actively seeks connections to research institutions and local universities to make it possible for students to participate in research on topics that are real-world oriented, rooted in STEM and connected to the national standards. Cox also applies for grants, training opportunities and other initiatives both locally and nationally to continue ongoing learning.
Joy Cox teaches middle school students with learning differences through technology and hands-on teaching. Students in Cox's class learn through multimedia resources such as virtual laboratories and scientific inquiry, as well as real life applications like job shadowing professionals. Cox has been described as a teacher who is an inspiration not only to her students, but to any parent who has a child with learning challenges.
Jay Cloud teaches technology education by using closed-captioned video technology, smart boards and hands-on computer programs to visualize concepts for his students. Cloud makes science and math relevant to his students through practical application. He has been described as a teacher who puts his students first and helps them to become accomplished learners with relevant skills.
Lexmark presented each teacher with a $1,000 award. Nine teachers in total will be recognized during the 2011-2012 academic year.
In order to be eligible for the INSPIRE award, a teacher must receive an online nomination as well as two reference letters from students, colleagues, parents, school administrators or community leaders. Eligible nominees must teach in one of the following Central Kentucky counties: Anderson, Bourbon, Clark, Fayette, Franklin, Jessamine, Madison, Scott and Woodford. Nominations can be made on the INSPIRE: Lexmark's Teaching Award page on Lexmark.com.
