Art, I'm beginning to hear rumblings of contraction in their direct branches and even possible sell offs.
Can anyone confirm/deny? If true, is this welcome news for Sharp dealers?

Heard of some NC, ehhmm consolidation.
well Sharp was announcing a number of new dealers recently this could be a play to be a Dealer only org in the US.
come to think of it why are OEM's in the business of selling anyways?
You would think OEM's would adopt a dealer structure like the Automotive industry.

(Really short version) Once upon a time...back in the day a dealer could get an exclusive for a market. Then dealers figured out that it was a good idea to have two vendors and Mfg's stopped offering exclusives. The solution, open direct operations that can never pick up another line. Here we are today. .... The End...
They could be going to more of a master distributor type of model. It is way less expensive for them to support 4-5 big wholesalers than 3-4-500 dealers across the US. The dist then has to give tech support, parts dist etc. A few years ago they pushed all the smaller dealers doing less than $500K anually thru distributors. This may be their long term master plan....... But who the heck knows?
Word on the Street (from the CDA meeting) is that Sharp is selling their copier division!

Yoda, what is the deal with the "consolidation" in NC?

Industry Analysts, Inc. has learned that Sharp Electronics has terminated their agreement with Xerox’s Global Imaging (GIS). The contract will end on November 26, 2012. After that date, GIS will no longer be able to purchase Sharp hardware and accessories.
Sharp will continue to provide supplies and parts to GIS for the foreseeable future but they have eliminated discounts. According to Rich Boomsma, Senior VP of Sales at Sharp, Sharp has “agreed to provide supplies and parts at an increased cost.”
The recent news about Sharp Electronics has been pretty bad to say the least. This seems like an interesting move and makes me wonder how dire are things at Sharp’s business products unit truly are if they are able to leave money on the table and cut Xerox off like this.
For a company that is rumored to be exiting the the office equipment business, Sharp seems to be moving ahead at full steam. In fact, Sharp has been very busy with R&D efforts on forthcoming products and has been signing on new dealers at the fastest rate we’ve seen in years (maybe ever), adding several new dealers in just the last six weeks, including, 3Point Technologies, Southern Duplicating, Alpha Laser, Hansen Associates, Inc., Pronet Image and Information Technology and Malone Office Environments.
If Sharp is really on their way out, someone should probably tell the people in Mawah NJ because they seem to have missed that memo. While they may be dealing with a challenging financial situation, Sharp’s business products group doesn’t appear to be going anywhere.

Going the Master Distributor route makes them a commodity in their catalog. No value selling, low cost and margins but it keeps the factories running - th ottom line.

I don't understand this, GIS Dealers are the largest purchasers of Sharp devices. heck most GIS dealer sell more Sharp that Xerox to boot.
Either GIS is demanding an agreement that is not profitable for Sharp or Sharp suddenly has another revenue source.
