The University of Texas at El Paso hired an outside company to handle its printing and mailing operations,which will result in the release of 10 UTEP mailroom and copy center employees.
Effective June 1, Ricoh Americas Corporation will operate and manage UTEP's copy center, mailroom and printing services, and UTEP employees with have the opportunity to apply with the contracted company for similar jobs.
UTEP will save about $1.7 million over seven years, officials said.
"The university is constantly evaluating its various business operations to improve services, while at the same time minimizing cost and increasing the revenue potential of our business functions," said Cindy Villa, vice president of business affairs for UTEP.
Under the seven-year contract, Ricoh will provide a $15,000 annual scholarship and contribute financially to the remodeling of the university's mailroom and copy center operations.
