Soda, Pop, Coke or Other

I grew up in northern Illinois, where we said "pop". I took a job in southeast Missouri, where my staff laughed at my "strange" way of talking, because to them it was "soda". They stopped laughing when I gave them a "pop" quiz (with the prize a can of....whatever you call it). Still love that memory!

I can understand most of the country, coke in the south, pop in the north... what the heck is up with the St. Louis area?

I'm from Texas, and most people down here call all soft drinks "Coke", but when I get into this debate, my simple answer is none of the above, because I just call it whatever brand it is. I.E.--Dr. Pepper, Diet Coke, Sprite, etc.

I'm curious if anyone outside of Texas calls shopping carts "buggies?" I literally laughed out loud the first time I heard that.

I've never called it a buggie...it's a cart. But, I have heard people call them "baskets", and that drives me nuts, because the "basket" is the little thing you hold in your hand.

So much fun! My son had a great laugh when I called a bathing suit, swimmimg trunks! Here in NJ, we will call a pizzia a "pie"!

As long as you don't call your bathing suit "Speedo."

Now, do you call your sandwich a GRINDER, HOAGIE, SUB, or WEDGE ?

Do you also "warsh" your clothes down by the "crick"? It always cracks me up the way my family members from Frostburg, Lonaconing & Garret County talk.

No, they're the mountain folk that live where it only turns green about two months out of the year and black bears crap on the lawn...even the rest of us in Maryland make fun of the way they talk!

Frostburg huh, I remember meeting the baseball coach of the Frostburg State, he was recruiting my son out of highschool, once my son heard the name of the college "Frostburg" he said NO WAY!

When I've been up there it's actually been quite warm most of the spring & summer, but you're right in the fact that most folks up there are total hicks. Random piece of baseball trivia: Lefty Grove was born & raised in Lonoconing, MD.
