The question is - does anyone know what kind of operating system R&R runs on and what print language it outputs. Second question is - has anyone successfully installed a printer or mfp to R&R and if so, how and with what hardware, middleware...?

As you may already know - almost every car dealership out there runs their business on a system made by Reynolds and Reynolds (www.reyrey.com) or ADP. All of the printer output comes from this system and it is not a windows based operating system. As far as I have been able to deduce is that the print data stream (What the server sends to the print for each print job) is a raw/ non-pcl/ps data stream much like Unix and AS400. I am confident if I put DOT in the middle, I could capture and direct the data stream as I need to but I have to do a quick deal (Parallel deal) that doesn't include DOT so I can continue my assessment of their output fleet and then come in with an engineered solution including the right technology.

If anyone has had any successful experience capturing and printing from R&R please write back as soon as possible. This client has about 750,000 prints a month currently going to Lexmark’s from R&R.

It is not all that welkl known but most car dealerships that sell over 300 vehicles per month willo generate over 500k in monthly volume. Especially target teh servie department. They will print 3-5 pages per repair order/vehicle/day. It is not uncommon for a delaership this size to service 25,000 cars a month that is about 125,000 pages in just RO's- now add dealership reports, sales, parts... They can easily get up to 500k per month. The hardest part is R&R and ADP have "Closed systems which make it very difficult to redirect the print volume. All the DOT fans should be salivating- I am close to proving DOT can take the datastream and put it to our MFP's. Stay Tuned...
Very interesting opportunity you have. Please keep us posted. I'm sure DOT can do the job, but unless they are needing it for variable data or a forms solution it may be overkill. If R&R is running an AS400 platform Ricoh has other less costly and some free solutions for printing other than DOT. Good Luck and again please keep us posted.
