For the past twelve days I have been in Shanghai. Which is to say the period bookended by Xi Jinping’s truly epochal state visit to the U.S. and speeches at the UN, and the road and rail clogging return of millions of now solidly middle class, car owning, leisure-oriented Chinese after a seven day “Golden Week” holiday which included both the traditional mid-Autumn festival and October 1 China National Day.

I had planned–and have succeeded–not to go anywhere outside Shanghai, wishing to avoid what a holiday like this in China (and, remarkably, also in Japan, where I had just spent a long “mini-GW” holiday period) inevitably results in truly, sometimes almost overwhelmingly oppressive crowds in public places. That Shanghai is home to some 24,000,000 people is never far from the mind. Going out except for the essentials is not, in short, fun or alluring.

Much more to be enjoyed is lounging in one’s apartment partaking in all the pursuits now possible via the internet and other digital devises, including, of course, television. Imagine my alarm when my Samsung TV suddenly died!  read more here about company shift that may result in sales of business units
