I came across a situation recently where a prospect has a piece of equipment under lease from a local competitor. Upon reviewing the contract I noticed they entered a different model on the paperwork then what they actually have.

Luckily for the prospect it's a $1 buyout lease.

I don't want to name names but they're from the Atlanta area and spell copier with a K.

This is not unusual. I know a dealer that would list several pieces of used equipment on one FMV lease show a new model being leased to the leasing company. I have seen signing for a 60ppm unit and delivered a 45ppm. I have seen changing of the name plate showing a faster model even if that was not the case. I have heard of a large buyout that was never paid to customer and dealer kept making excuses to delay the payment. I have seen all sorts of things the real challenge is to explain to the customer on how to approach the next deal.
The WORST I ever hear about was a low life Salesman that would sell a 6/60 lease. They would sell a customer a lease saying that it was a six month trial and he would write a 6 in the space for months, then after the customer signed the document, he would add a "0" after the "6" and turn it in as a "60" month lease, no trial. As long as the customer didn't want t return it the sales puke got away with it, but he eventually got caught, and had to relocate his shell game.

Gives Copier Sales People a bad name.

That is the most creative scam I've heard of, it's awesome that he got caught. It's shame that this crap still happens today

At the risk of giving the unscrupulous new ideas, years ago I dealt with a competitor that would sell a 36 month term but leave the number of months blank when asking for a signature and then put in 60 months.

One of the biggest giants in our industry used to do that all the time. That's how their reps were trained to sell. Best part was the service contract was 36-months but the lease was 60 months. They would then try to upgrade the lease 24 months early under the threat that the service contract was going to go up significantly. Funny cause I just read a thread about this company going for another companie's jugular. Funny stuff.
