Ricoh Rumor!! New Strategy?

Hmmm ... Samsung? Have you seen specs on the new Samsung SCX-6345N? Considering Ricoh's relationship relabeling Samsung, can't help but think this would be the one. The no 11x17 high speed option we all have bantered about ... Copy size up to legal, Letter 45 ppm, duplex up to 42 ppm, easy touch screen control, standard hard drive, standard 50 sheet adf, duplex, scan in color (email/FTP/SMB/Client), network and USB print, 520 sheet paper tray plus 100 sheet bypass, OPTIONAL Fax, 3 x 520 additional trays, finisher ... Toner is 20K, user replaceable Drum Cartridge is 60K, reasonable cost per page for cartridges ... Samsung wholesale approx $2,000.

I have seen the toner listed as $116.99/20K yield ... drum $223.99/60K yield

So, far that's a retail of .00953, and thats not including the fuser nor the transfer roller. However with volume of 5-10K per month this may not be an issue when considering a 45ppm MFP with 11x17 that will sell for over $14K.

I have seen an early version of this unit at the Samsung Canada head office and it does look reasonable. The DF is not going to be as heavy duty as the copier based products, but for many offices this is not an issue unless they do a lot of scanning. The user interface reminds me of the touch screen on the Lexmark MFP printer based products and is extremely simple looking. This will appeal to a lot of purchasing type buyers. This is going to be a price led product. I know the guy that Samsung has hired to be responsible for setting up the dealer side of their Canadian operations and he is an ex-highly successful Kyocera Regional Manager. He knows the printer and copier business and understands dealerships. He says the Canadian strategy is to put this product through the BTA channel, and protect them by pricing from distribution. Don't have Canadian pricing as yet, but it certainly looks interesting as a competitor to HP and Xerox who are already well into this game.

Good luck guys...we all knew this had to be coming....wait till we see the colour versions of this kind of product?

I will look at this product if ricoh re-labels it. I'm not interested in becoming a Samsung dealer - nothing is worse than selling a product and then seeing it Sams Club the next weekend, except maybe your customer calling you and saying they saw the product you just sold them at Sam's club for several hundred dollars less.

I saw the Samsung product at ITEX last week. They say that it will not be sold except through dealers. It is the SCX-6345N and is identicle to the Xerox 4150. They say that according to to research, only 2.35% of the U.S. use 11x17 and the HP4345 has 14% of the worldwide segment 4 copier market.
The SCX6345N retails for $2,995 with network B&W print and Color Scan standard and 4800x4800 dpi On the scanner, 1200x1200 dpi print and 600x600 dpi copy.

Think of the possibilities and the page counts that can be captured where accounts are producing 10K per month. You can meet their needs with an 11x17 printer (if needed) and then have the MFP for the rest of the document volume! Heck, what does a C4500 sell for with finishing and paper trays? $21K or more, you can sell the SCX for $6K maxed and then supply them with a c811dn with finisher for $6K, they would then have 45ppm output for all devices, and still be around 12K and beat the socks off the competition.

This is a window of opportunity to "right sell" save them hardware dollars and collect all of the clicks.

I like your thinking. It may not be what we would prefer to sell, but if it meets client needs and we can make a buck selling them, then it certainly seems to make sense. I expect to see one in our back office in the next few days...we'll give everyone a sense of how they actually work and what the technical team says about them once we have it tried out.

Well, the unit arrived and took our technical team about 20 minutes to set it up...sight unseen. We have the fully loaded unit, 4 paper trays, fax, finisher with staple. It took a bit more time to put it on the network and we have been giving it the testing from them on. Early feel is it is a pretty good unit. Wouldn't want to put the document feeder into a site doing tons of scanning...but it is certainly fine for normal document copying and faxing.

Only issue we have as yet is getting the SMB scanning hooked up. Appears to be some setting we can't find and the training material we downloaded doesn't give us the details we need. But we have seen this with other brands the first time we setup a new model so that is not unusual.

Printing is quick, as it should be. Interface is actually quite intuitive...very low training need I would say. A lot less complicated than most. Compared to many other tier 2 and 3 units the interface is really very elegant.

Our unit came with the ability to store documents from the printer for secure print and for reuse. Unit has account codes capability built in. Since I don't have the full specs etc. not sure what is optional or not.

The DF is a recirculating duplex unit and the unit has standard duplex. Slows it down marginally in print, but not a lot. The offset finisher is super easy to install and works ok, although it seems to always offset each page as they are ejected which slows it down a bit vs. a straight out exit. Finisher can be removed very easily by undoing one cable and pushing down a lever and pulling it out of the base. Should make any service issues (or replacement if needed) easy. Toner and Drum units are easy to remove and are definately user replaceable. fuser is mounted to the right side panel and can be removed with a couple of screws. Not really targeted at user replaceability, but an interested IT type could do it easily.

Can't offer any pricing info at this point as my contact at Samsung Canada says they have not set everything up yet.

Certainly I can see where this unit could find a home in a print centric location with need for some copy, fax and scan. It offers most of the goodies that bigger units do, is fast and simple to setup and run. It will be interesting to see what the running costs look like.

It looks good as well. Does present itself as a mikey mouse design like many other lower end products do.

Once I have some numbers I'll add some more info.

I'm 90% sure Muratec is also relableing this.

How is the print/copy quality? Some of the other sammys don't have great solids.

I just figured the retail cpc with drum, toner (mono), 100K PM Kit and 200K PM Kit. Retail cpc is .0117116, not sure what the wholesale cost is, however how much would you add on a per copy basis for on-site service if the user was doing 3,000 pages a month in volume. I thought about .005 per page.

Thoughts?

Our dealership just purchased one of these SCX6345N's. I have been successful in setting up the printing, NetScan and scan-to-folder. But the scan-to-email is making me pull my hair out. And to make it worse, the smasung hotline isn't much help either. Just wondering if anyone tried this and got it working yet? Thanks for any help

We have run into this as the Xerox WC4150 but so far I haven't been able to see service & supply pricing from Xerox - does anyone know how they are pricing their service & supplies on this unit?

I read today that Smasung is ready to release a 55ppm MFP in the next three months!

Assuming they are going to use a similar name, a Google search for SCX6355N shows that it will use the same supplies and accessories as the SCX6345N.

Guys...just a quick update on the 6345 in action. I have been using it as my workgroup printer, scanner, copier for about a month now. Generally no issues. It is a bit slow to get the first copy out and the first scan done as it comes up with a warning to wait for the scanner to warm up. Other than that it is a very easy product to use and it seems to run fine. No jams to date...finisher works...single position staple and sort. I can't find anything really wrong with it. At MSRP it can be sold fully configured for about $6500 in Canada and give us over 30 points on the unit. Don't see that kind of margin on many copier products anymore. Of course it will all depend on the dealers holding the line on prices and not discounting all of the advantages away...So far, if a client doesn't need 11 x 17 and wants some speed then I can't see a reason not to sell them one of these.

Well, to date I have sold threeof the Sammys 6345N, I also had the chance to work with the unit in our office and to tell you the truth IT WAS VERY USER FRIENDLY!

The document feeder was fast, along with print and outputr production. Mixed sized originals was there along with all of the standard features that are needed.

We are delivering two today and one next week, we are trying a cpc of .017 per page. I think this is a superb unit went trying to win a deal with a price consious customer. You can sell at list and shut out all of the competition.

There are a couple of things you all should know about this unit.

First it will not receive letter and legal faxes! I over came this by convincing the customer to use fax forward2email, this worked fine, plus they have digital copy of the file.

Second, it seems that no one can get the job accounting feature to work. After talking with Samsung they are admitted that the system needs a firmware update.

What firmware that you guys running now ? I have done the job accounting. What is your problem for the job accounting ? so far no problems, but for the usage counter and impression count report, seems got some bugs there. The amount got slight different.
Does any1 here get the " No Response From MCB " when doing network scan ?

Samsung 6345N review!

We'll its been about six months since the Samsung 6345N was introduced and about 4 months or so since it has been on the street. For those of you who do not know the 6345N is a 45ppm MFP that can scan, print copy & fax (optional) all for a retail price of $2,995. The system can take an optional fax module along with a finisher/stapler and upto three additional 550 sheet paper trays.

I have sold six of these units since they came out and have captured about 50,000 pages per month for all of the devices.

Here's what I like about the 6345N:

Auto Doc Feeder is fast and copy and print speed is as advertised!

Large 550 sheet paper trays for letter or legal.

All in all well built, easy to use and will serve the needs well of illiterate MFP users. Not many bells and whistles, just down and dirty simple fucntionality.

Here goes what I don't like:

Can't receive letter and legal faxes, everything must go to letter or legal.

Accounting Package will not work, Samsung has stated that they are aware of the flaw and are developing a firmware upgrade.

Every time you replace or add paper you have to confirm the paper size.

Touch Screen seems like its not calibrated correctly and you have to select fucntions on most ocassions more than once.

Halftone copy quality is horrible from a printer document, no adjustments seem to work well.

Extremely hard to make scan2email connections.

Advanced Copy functionality such as duplex, collate, mixed sizes can not be selected until original documents have been loaded in the document feeder.

Summary:
For the price there is alot of bang for the buck for the print, and copy speed. Illiterate MFP users will like this machine and it will perform fine up to 10,000 pages per month. Verticle Markets are Realty, Mortgage, Title and Attorneys if they need to receive both letter and legal faxes you need to talk them into faxforward2email, this will work well and eliminate the problem of not being able to receive and print letter and legal at the same time.

We I would not sell this machine, is to advanced MFP users that are used to all of the functionality and ease of use of our current machines, if you do place one of these with advanced users, I guarantee you'll be removing it witin a weeks time!

Bringing me to the final point, I beleive that these types of units from Samsung, HP, Xerox (relabled Samsung) and Muratec (relabled Samsung) are needed and their should be more of them. There is no need for an 11x17 foot print for the verticle markets that I described. Ricoh, and Canon need to step up to plate and give the customers what they need and want. It's said that 77% of all MFP users do not need 11x17.

One other note, for the price these systems allowed me to place units and beat the competition badly. I heard that a few reps stated they did not no anything about the unit, another rep stated that they only make phones. Bottom line was that in a competitive deal this system can capture your TDV each an every time.

If anyone else has anything to add, please do so!

Sorry for the late response, I do not get paid for clicks. I should get paid for clicks. When I rep tries to capture TDV and does he or she should be rewarded. The reward should be the first three months revenue from the per click charge.

LOL One pain in the ass thing is having to tell the machine what size paper is in the tray whenever you refill the tray or load the bypass. I can understand and accept having to set the bypass size but not the main trays!!! Kinda stooooopid if you ask me. Also you can't recieve faxes in 11" and 14". You have to pick one or the other. That really baffles me because you can recieve in both sizes with the 3050 (Sammy 5530), even from the bypass. I guess you can resolve this by fax forwarding to email. But most customers still like to have the real deal in their grimey little hands. You know that old saying about old dogs! The next issue is the one I think alot of my customers are going to complain about. When you try to do a long run of even one document with 14% or more coverage the machine pauses every 11th or 12th copy for 4-5 seconds then starts up again. At first the guys down in Texas at Muratec thought it might be a memory issue but the machine comes with 256mb. We think it's a toner add issue. If you check the toner inlet on the dev unit it is really small. If you copy something with more coverage it seems to pause earlier like on the 8th or 9th copy. I've even seen it pause on the 2nd copy. I'm still waiting for Al at Muratec to get back to me on this one. I faxed him a copy of our Densi test sheet which has 14% coverage and his machine was pausing as well. It's kinda hard to sell a 45/m machine that pauses for 4-5 seconds every 10 copies or so. I don't even see anything in the specs to defend this. Have any of you seen this?

We have a half dozen or so in the field, no complaints here, I did watch a customer send a print job of a 100 page booklet and there was no pause. Is this just happening with copies? If so, it could be a memory issue. The machine that I spoke about had the memory upgrade installed before we put it in the field. That may be the issue. Let me know what you come up with.

Well I scanned in my Densi test sheet and sent 40 copies to the Samsung and it paused every 12 sheet. The Densi test sheet with the Space Shuttle on it has 14% coverage. I then sent the first 5 pages of the 1022 service manual and it didn't pause at all. Our machine doesn't have the memory upgrade. I guess there is a possibility that it could be a memory issue but it really seems like a toner add issue. How can Samsung honestly sell this box as a 45/m machine with this type of limitation. We tried doing 500 copies of a brochure for a customer that should have taken 11 minutes took over 20. Customers are gonna be ticked at that.

I would put the memory in and see what happens, it could be that the scanned images (copies) are much larger than the print file. The unit scans to memory first for copying and then starts to print. Let me know.

Samsung should have released a firmware update at this time for the job accounting feature. This was also a feature that we had problems with.
