This could be a lot of things associated with the scanner assembly.
Usually, its a dirty scanner rod. Clean the rod with alcohol and clean the inside of the metal bearings that the ccd assembly rides on. Do not place lubricant on the scanner rod. It will attract dirt.
It also could be aging scanner motor unable to pull the scanning assembly underneath the ADF
Also could be defective ribbon cable going bad when fully extended.
If above fails replace scanner shaft, scanner motor, ribbon cable, and the CCD carriage that rides on the shaft. Also order Shaft sponge H5211221, and Shaft sponge holder, H211222. They were mods added to MV310E to clean the shaft as the carriage slid.
