Ricoh Distributed Scan Management with new 03 series

Can anyone explain or tell me the advantages of using Distributed Scan Management with the new 03 series? If I'm understanding the "Ricoh Sales Information Guide" this can only be used with Windows Active Directory"?

DSM will let you centrally manage scan buttons on an mfp (that supports DSM) to a folder, email, or SharePoint from a Windows 2008 R2 Server. Access to the buttons is controlled with AD. No OCR functionality but it is now an option on the mfp itself.

No more individual address books to worry about. Ricoh announced support back in 2010 but unfortunately very few models have it.
