Taipei, Dec. 15, 2009 (CENS)--Shipments of SFPs (single-function printers) in Taiwan reached 99,464 units in the third quarter of 2009, up 20.3% from the previous quarter and a 2.3% decrease from the same period of 2008, according to the newly released IDC Taiwan Quarterly SFP and MFP Tracker report.

Shipments of inkjet MFPs (multifunctional printers) during the period was 132,043, up 23.5% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) and a year-on-year (YoY) increase of 12.3%.

A total of 19,686 laser MFPs were sold, up 30.7% QoQ and up 7.7% YoY.

Irene Lien, market analyst of PC & peripherals group at IDC Taiwan, said that the major growth momentum in third-quarter MFP shipments comes from mainly models pushed by printer brands rather than copier machine nameplates because the business MFP sector was still stock in the unfavorable economic conditions due to limited enterprise purchase budgets and impacts from sales of second-hand models. "In the fourth quarter, however, the laser MFP market in Taiwan is expected to grow due to government`s procurement projects," Lien said.

Joey Yen, another analyst of PC & peripherals at IDC Taiwan, pointed out that third quarter has been the sales peak season for printers in Taiwan, while from then on vendors` new-model promotions printer sales are expected to continue to year-end. Under the not-so-good economic conditions, enterprise spending would be more conservative, while government and state-run enterprises` procurements are expected to support the business printer segment, he said.

Shipments of SFPs grew 36.9% QoQ and 12.8% yoY to 60,791 units in the third quarter, while during the same period 132,043 inkjet MFPs were sold, up 23.5% QoQ and 12.3% YoY.

Epson maintained its No. 1 position in the inkjet SFP segment in the third quarter, while HP and Canon followed. HP was the top player in domestic inkjet MFP market, while Epson and Canon followed. The top-three leaders together won a more than 98% market share in inkjet MFP market.

A total 27,494 laser SFPs were shipped in the third quarter, up 4.8% QoQ and up 2.9% YoY. Black and white laser SFPs accounted for 77% of the overall laser SFP market, lower than previous quarter, and the shipment decline ratio of such product outstripped that of color models. HP, Epson, Fuji Exrox maintained their leading positions with a combined market share of more than 85%.

In the third quarter shipments of A3-size color laser MFPs were 5,231 units, up 6.0% QoQ but down 22.0% YoY. Color laser MFPs accounted for 14.9% of the overall A3-size color printer market, a decline for the third straight quarters. Fuji Xerox, Sharp, and Toshiba were the top-three player in the segment.
