$20.00 for 500 sheets means you have been selling copiers for too long!  Ha! Ha!

I think the paper manufacturers invented 2,500 sheet half cases of paper to reduce the sticker shock to their customers.  The half case costs somewhat more than a full 5,000 sheet case per sheet.  5,000 sheets is $79.95 on average or $0.0160 so no cheaper than Walmart per sheet.

I think lower quality paper is somewhat cheaper at Costco in Canada but you have to have a membership and you have to drive there and spend time waiting in line.  There is a hidden cost to that.

I think print shops feel that the dire paper shortages they experienced during COVID is still not over and they tend to overstock paper whenever feasible.

I work with one large stationer and they literally struggle to buy and inventory entire truckloads of paper both for availability to their customers and to get the best possible price.  The little or medium sized buyer, unless you are a member of a buying group, has little chance against the big buyers.

Occassionally, when competing against an OEM direct sales rep, I will include a case of paper in my quote just to make their life miserable because it requires a bunch of approvals on their side.
