Sum-up: Light-production machine with versatile options.
The Océ VarioPrint 110, 120, and 135 are part of the DP Line, which is based on Océ’s DirectPress technology. DirectPress eliminates multiple steps in the printing process by converting data into toner image in one step. These machines not only utilize Océ’s technology but Canon’s finishing features and scanning functionality as well.
The VarioPrint 110 runs at 110ppm, while the Vario Print 120 and 135 has a speed of 125ppm and 135ppm, respectively. They all print at 600dpi resolution, and utilize PCL and PostScript printing. These models are heavyweights, made of steel with few plastic parts, in contrast to many machines on the market. Océ machines are built for the most demanding users in the production area, not for casual users.
These models come standard with a choice of several input-tray configurations. The standard paper capacity is 4,000 sheets, and that is made up of two trays of 1,500 sheets each and two additional trays of 500 sheet each. These trays accept paper weight of 14lb. bond to 110lb. cover. There is also an optional ePIM (External Paper Input Module) system with a maximum of 4,600 sheets – two trays of 600 sheet each and two trays of 1,700 sheet each. All of the paper trays use air separation and vacuum feeding, and all can handle heavy stock. In another nice touch, all of the trays are user-adjustable.
There is also an impressive range of finishing accessories on these models. These units are modular, and any number of them can be attached to the machine in a variety of configurations. Up to two high-capacity stackers — each holding up to 10,000 sheets in a lower tray and 1,000 sheets in a top tray — can be added to your configuration. Two different finishers and a paper folding unit are also available.
A stapling finisher has a two-tray capacity of 5,000 sheets and a multiposition stapling capacity for up to 100 sheets. A 2- or 3-hole punch unit can be added to this finisher.
A booklet-making finisher with two-tray 5,000-sheet capacity is also available. It comes with multiposition stapling for up to 100 sheets and a saddlestitcher for up to 30 sheets that can deliver booklets to an output tray. A 2- or 3-hole punch unit is available.
You can also choose a 400-sheet document insertion unit. Furthermore, you can add a booklet trimmer with capacity to trim the face of 30-sheet saddlestitched booklets. The paper folding unit can perform C-, Z-, V-, and Zigzag-folds.
Finally, there is the Perfect Binder, made by Canon and designed specifically to enable the production of high-quality books without operator intervention. The Perfect Binder has a binding capacity of 200 sheets. An automatic two-knife trimmer is capable of trimming all three sides of a perfect bound book.
Scanning functionality can be achieved with the optional Color Image Reader with a single-pass duplex document feeder (DADF). The throughput of the scanner at maximum productivity is 120ipm in black-and-white and 105ipm in color. It holds up to 300 sheets. The color scanner, as with other high-end digital printers, will likely be used mostly for scanning in pages to be assembled (possibly supplemented by digitally created pages) for printing. You can scan to various destinations, including to file, to USB, to email, and DocBox.
These machines also use the Océ PRISMAsync module – one such functionality of PRISMAsync is job scheduling controls, such as providing alerts of any toner or paper refills needed. There is also the optional DocBox for any advanced editing to the job right at the printer.
The VarioPrint 110, 120, and 135 combine Océ’s well-known technology with Canon’s excellent finishing and scanning functionalities into durable machines. These are great buys for the production market that need high-volume printing but no color requirements.
We give them our Editor’s Choice Award.
