Ricoh eyes commercial print with high-volume kit debut at Drupa

Ricoh has restated its intention to become a major player in the commercial print market after revealing the launch of a high-volume colour machine at Drupa.
The acquisitive Japanese-owned firm made the first major hardware announcement of this week's Drupa pre-show press conference with news that it is to reveal its Ricoh Pro C900 printer for the first time in Düsseldorf this summer.
The 90ppm printer is aimed at high-end and mid-range variable-data colour printing, including transpromo work, and is expected to take on existing machines from manufacturers such as Xerox, Canon, Océ and Konica Minolta.
Peter Williams, chief operating officer of Ricoh subsidiary Infotec Europe, described the 1,200dpi C900 as "truly unique" and said it was the "most visible product example of Ricoh's dedication to the production print market".
The machine will be able to handle stocks of up to 300gsm and SRA3, and will also include a range of finishing features.
Ricoh also revealed that it has formed a new production printing business group within the company that will be dedicated to both R&D and sales in the print business.
No pricing information was released for the C900, which will also be available with an integrated scanner as the C900s, although Williams said: "The product will be unique in its combination of product and cost."
