It was their first time to visit Nevis, but a couple from
America were so impressed with what they saw that they donated an $8,000 photo
copier to Lyn Jeffers School.
Malcolm and Jeanne Campbell, who live in
New Jersey, made the Valentine’s Day gift presentation to the school on Tuesday,
February 22. School principal Jacquelyn Brookes Jeffers said the photocopier was
really needed because the one they had was not working properly and was costing
too much money to operate.
Mrs. Campbell said she and her husband heard
about the school from Margret Pinney two years ago and have been wanting to
visit Nevis ever since. This is their first visit to the island.
“We
wanted to come and see what the school was like and if it was really as special
as she said it was,” said Mrs. Campbell. After arriving in Nevis on February 16,
she said, “We found the school is even better. We really enjoyed meeting you
(Mrs. Jeffers) and wanted to leave a little something for Valentine's Day so you
can remember us today, tomorrow and the next day.”
The principal and John
Yearwood thanked the couple on behalf of the school, pointing out that not
everybody would give a gift that cost so much.
“It is going to be of
great benefit to the teachers and students and we will remember you every day
because we will be using the copier every day,” said Yearwood.
Members of
the school board have a vision on where they want the school to go and are
planning to construct a new school in the future, said Yearwood.
“We have
been talking to Mr. Parry who is trying to locate government land where we can
start a new school,” he added. All of the school board members and teachers
believe the future for Lyn Jeffers School looks very positive.
Campbell
said he and his wife thoroughly enjoyed their “wonderful and marvelous week” on
Nevis and are looking forward to visiting the island again.
