HP is the most secure????
- Numerous industry and IT news organizations reported on a vulnerability in the fax boards of many HP devices
- Check Point Research of Israel reported that in many HP inkjet MFPs, a hacker can dial up the fax number, send a specially created image file containing malware by fax to the MFP, allowing attacker to penetrate one access point in order to enter the customer’s entire network.


HP dealer executive leaves firm
- Thomas Jensen, a 15 year HP veteran, announced he is leaving company to “focus on new opportunities”
- “He was the face of the channel for HP and did a lot of good work for partners. Thomas was the liason, the glue that kept the HP channel together”; stated Mark Romanowski, member of the HP Partner Advisory Council.


Fujifilm reports earnings
- total revenue down 1.2% to 564.9 billion yen ($5.1 billion) for the last quarter
o operating income up 8.2% to 36.9 billion yen ($332.3 million)
o operating margin improved 0.5% to 6.5%
o net income decreased 35.3% to 28.3 billion yen
- Document Solutions division (printers and MFPs) revenue down 6% to 241.1 billion yen ($2.2 billion)

o The maker of most of the Xerox-branded MFPs and printer hardware announced “fundamental structural reforms” centered on its Document Solutions business with the goal of realizing 50 billion yen in savings by the year ending in March 2020 by cutting 10,000 jobs, shuttering and consolidating manufacturing sites, shaking up management, and retooling its product lineup

- Dan Cooper, who was the President of Xerox’s Global Imaging Systems division, is apparently now managing partner at Jamcoop LLC of Virginia

o Installed new Xerox Iridesse production color laser system
o Will be used to enter the packaging market

Toshiba TEC gives out more earnings detail
- In the first quarter posted net sales down 1.1% to 114.4 billion yen ($1.03 billion)
- operating profit rose 26.9% to 4.3 billion yen ($38.4 million)
- operating margin improved to 3.7%
- Printing Solutions division (which includes MFPs) net sales down 0.1% to 47.1 billion yen ($423.9 million)

Intel sells chips for artificial intelligence
- sold at least $1 billion in artificial intelligence processor chips during 2017
- marks the first time Intel has disclosed its revenue from AI processor chips.

Ricoh ordered to cooperate with auditors
- the government of India has ordered Ricoh’s division in India to cooperate with its auditors for conducting a detailed forensic audit of the books of accounts of Ricoh

Canon updates its cloud doc management
- introduced the next generation of Therefore Online, its cloud-based information-management solution that it introduced in 2014
- claims that 68% chief information officers and senior IT decision makers surveyed cite profitability and productivity as key benefits to using the cloud in business processes over the next two to five years

- considering suspending operations at one of its mobile phone manufacturing plants in Tianjin, China due to slumping sales and rising labor costs, the Electronic Times reported
- has focused its major mobile phone investments on production facilities in Vietnam and India and opened the world’s biggest smartphone factory outside New Delhi

Amazon Echo can spy on you?
- A security flaw in Amazon Echo speakers allows hackers to spy on users
- allows criminals to use a modified version of the smart speaker to hack into other Amazon Echo devices
- eavesdrop on your private conversations at home, researchers have found.
- hack involved removing the flash memory chip on an Echo speaker, modifying it and then soldering it back into place

LMI loses lawsuit

- LaserMasters LLC, also known as LMI Solutions, a toner cartridge remanufacturer, had filed lawsuit against Bruce Andre, former owner of Global Printer Services, and a rival printer remanufacturer called Liberty Parts Team
- final judgment issued in favor of the defendants and against the plaintiffs, and case dismissed
- LMI acquired laser printer remanufacturer Global Printer Services in 2014 then subsequently acquired printer remanufacturer Printersdirect as part of strategy for LMI to become a major player in the remanufactured laser printer business
- also acquired laser printer parts supplier Parts Now in 2015
- lawsuit claimed that Mr. Andre and Liberty Parts Team schemed to damage LaserMasters’ printer remanufacturing business thereby breaching various agreements related to the sale of Global Printer Services
- argued that they acquired Global Printer Services from Mr. Andre in June 2014 for $5.5 million plus 75,000 shares in LaserMasters
o as part of the deal, Mr. Andre agreed to an asset purchase agreement that stated that Mr. Andre could not solicit GPS customers
o Mr. Andre also agreed not to make “derogatory or disparaging” statements about GPS, LaserMasters, or the Willerts.
o Mr. Andre had served as president of GPS under its ownership by LMI, but he left and joined Liberty Parts Team
o alleged that after Mr. Andre poached key GPS employees and Liberty Parts Team and entered the printer remanufacturing business and directly compete against GPS
o tried to woo away GPS customers by telling them that LaserMasters had closed down operations for GPS and Parts Now
- LMI could be ordered to pay Liberty Parts Team’s attorneys’ fees and court costs.


Apple Mac laptops have vulnerability
- a bug in setup tools for some Mac laptops has the potential to allow a "well-funded, motivated" hacker to compromise the device the first time it connects to Wi-Fi, Wired magazine reports
- targets Macs using Apple's Device Enrollment Program and its Mobile Device Management platform
- "We found a bug that allows us to compromise the device and install malicious software before the user is ever even logged in for the very first time,"
o "By the time they're logging in, by the time they see the desktop, the computer is already compromised."
- Apple released a fix to the bug in July, however, Macs that have been shipped with the older operating system will still be vulnerable, according to Wired.
