Hi Art,

I recently received your email concerning "lack participation with members who only lurk (read) and do not contribute with answering a thread, posting info or helping when another P4P'er is asking for help."

While I do agree with you, I feel as though I need to explain my reason to you and other members. Maybe (and I'm hopeful) it will launch some additional contributions as well.

I think I had mentioned this to you before, but you need to understand that some members need to be extremely careful in what they communicate or post in forums. For example, there are actually warning signs posted all over my work place. These warnings indicate that we are to "be careful" what we post, blog, email, etc. In other words, posting may lead to "misrepresentation of the company" and even "cause for disciplinary" action (yes, up to and including termination). While I am uncertain if you have actually see any, I can tell you that throughout my travels to businesses within our geographical area, I have seen quite a few. Not on the sales floor, reception or showroom, but in the administrative area and employee break room.

While I had expressed to you a few months ago that our business has drastically changed -- many of us continue to "be careful" and not put our careers, family, or livelyhood in any type of jeopardy. With the economy and industry changing so rapidly, many of us are reluctant to speak freely.

I am curius to see if other members agree or if you have received similar feedback. For all you do, thank you. I appreciate that regardless of my circumstances you continue to keep it real!

Obviously, I am not in your office but I feel I can guess what the purpose of those signs are and I have a hard time believing that they are suggesting that open dialog with peers on subjects designed (for the most part) to improve our production and effectiveness is the type of dialog they seek to condemn. Nude photos or threats against the President maybe but P4P hotel? Surely they have bigger things to worry about.
Thanks for posting a comment.

I am sorry, but I need to disagree with you. First, (this is spelled out) we must refrain from identifying ourself as an employee or affiliate on any blog, forum, or social networking site. Furthermore, you're right. Open dialog in a conversation so we can help each other improve is one thing, but written, documented detail is another. Not certain about your role within your organization, but a posting about improving our productivity to one person maybe interpreted as intentional disclosure to another.

So at this point, you might be the only person who is not nervous about posting to this comment! I'm hoping others are out there. We shall see. Thanks!
I'm not nervous, we all need to share sales experience as much as we can. We can't afford to be 'mums the work' on solutions and practices that will help us or our customers.

Which leads me to.......I'll see if I can add an ANON log in.

So, the answer is.......don't tell anyone who you are Smile
