Lyra Research Projects Worldwide Color Laser Printer Shipments Will Reach 2.1 Million Units in 2005
Report finds shipment growth will boost revenue to $3.6 billion
NEWTONVILLE, MA (March 22, 2004)—The color laser printer market is one of the fastest-growing market segments in the hard copy industry, according to a new report from Lyra Research. The report, A Colorful Future for Office Printers, projects that worldwide color laser printer shipments will grow from 1.2 million units in 2003 to 2.1 million units in 2005 (see figure). The report also finds that the projected increase in shipments will boost revenue from $2.9 billion in 2003 to $3.6 billion in 2005.
"Shipments will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 30 percent through 2005," said Stephanie Guza, a research analyst at Lyra and author of the report. "That means the color laser printer market represents one of the largest opportunities for office vendors today in terms of both hardware and supplies." Guza added, "While a fast-growing installed base of color laser printers is certainly good news for hardware vendors, it is even more important for supplies vendors because the installed base drives the consumables market, which is rapidly becoming more profitable for vendors than the hardware market. Revenue from sales of color laser cartridges will grow to $4.0 billion in 2005."
A Colorful Future for Office Printers is based on research findings presented at the 2004 Lyra Imaging Symposium. It includes forecasts for color laser printer shipments, revenue, and installed base as well as for color laser cartridge shipments and revenue. The report also presents primary research on the most popular applications used to produce color output and examines aftermarket penetration of the color laser cartridge market.
