Loma Terrace Elementary School was named one of 250 schools across the country to win a free eco-friendly color copy machine from Toshiba America Business Solutions.
The new machine will help Loma Terrace reduce its carbon footprint, reduce waste, save money on printer-related costs, all while teaching students the importance of being environmentally friendly. The school is one of two winners in the El Paso region to have the new system donated.
This prize is another example of the district’s sustainability initiatives aimed to incorporate lesson plans and projects that expose students to the importance of being eco-friendly. For example, in 2014, the Ysleta High School Environmental Science Academy began a new collaborative with Texas Tech University and El Paso Community College the gives students the opportunity to earn college credit in environmental science/engineering in certain high school classes offered by the academy.
As part of its Sustainable Schools initiative that kicked off on Earth Day this year, Toshiba committed to donate to each of the winning schools, each with a retail value of $16,000. Loma Terrace was the first school in El Paso to have its unit installed and is already benefiting from its paper- and toner-saving services.
According to Toshiba, the eco-sensitive MFP is capable of erasing images and text allowing paper to be reused up to an average of five times. This dramatic reduction in paper usage allows organizations the opportunity to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by up to 57 percent, as validated by the British Standards Institute, a global national standards organization.
