Lanier Introduces Free Postscript Print Drivers For 47 Output Devices
ATLANTA, GEORGIA, April 1, 2005 --- Lanier Worldwide, Inc. recently uploaded Postscript™ printer definition (PPD) files for 47 Lanier print drivers to www.linuxprinting.org. Lanier customers can now download these free software files to print applications from a wide range of Lanier output devices in Linux environments. The PPD files for these print drivers will be available immediately.
“With Linux being adopted worldwide as a primary server platform, it is essential that Lanier offers printing solutions to support Linux implementations,” said Dominic Pontrelli, vice president of Marketing for Lanier. “Our printers have long been compatible with UNIX®-based and MacOS® X operating systems. Now with the free downloads, users can take advantage of Lanier document management solutions in virtually any network environment.”
“The print drivers make Lanier printers and digital multifunction products (MFPs) viable, cost-effective options for Linux users seeking to implement new document management solutions. Plus, current Lanier customers can use the downloads to facilitate a conversion to the popular open-source Linux operating system — without sacrificing their current printer investment.”
The PPD files make printer capabilities—including available fonts, image resolution, duplex speed, maximum page size, and many other features—accessible to programs on Linux operating systems, helping ensure optimal interoperability. Postscript is the compatible programming language used to facilitate communication between the output device and the operating system.
The print drivers include Foomatic data, which makes them easily accessible on the database-driven download section of www.linuxprinting.org. The Web site offers resources to help users print on free operating systems such as Linux, and on commercial UNIX-based operating systems like MacOS X.
“Savvy IT professionals use LinuxPrinting.org to leverage all the capabilities of their operating systems,” Pontrelli said. “By adding downloadable print drivers to the site, Lanier can reach more customers and offer unparalleled document management support.”
Lanier uploaded the 47 Postscript drivers in late February and early March 2005. The list of supported Lanier output devices is available at http://www.linuxprinting.org/download/PPD/Lanier/.
