SAN DIEGO, Jun 01, 2015 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Kyocera Communications, Inc. today announced it has received two awards for its ongoing dedication to environmental and recycling programs, including the “2015 Recycler of the Year” from the City of San Diego's Environmental Services Department (ESD) and the “Manufacturer’s Responsibility Award” from the Industrial Environmental Association. This is the eighth time Kyocera has been named Recycler of the Year and the 15th consecutive year the company has received a recycling award from the City of San Diego. Kyocera has earned a total of 23 environmental awards from the City—more than any other San Diego company.

“It is a great honor to be continually recognized by the City of San Diego and other organizations for our leadership and ongoing dedication to environmental initiatives,” said Eric Anderson, senior vice president and general manager of global sales and marketing at Kyocera Communications. “Our efforts are part of Kyocera’s global philosophy and commitment to social responsibility, and we strive to serve as a role model for other San Diego companies.”

As part of Kyocera’s ongoing commitment to the environment, the company recently announced a new national cell phone recycling program, which is free to consumers wishing to dispose of unused mobile phones of any brand. The program is facilitated by SecondWave Recycling, a socially responsible organization that facilitates free phone recycling to support charities, and for every four phones recycled for their raw materials, a donation of $1 is made to Cell Phones For Soldiers, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing cost-free communication services to active-duty military members and veterans. A longstanding supporter of Cell Phones For Soldiers, Kyocera already has provided more than 50,000 minutes of long-distance service to date through past recycling programs.

In its fiscal year that ended March 31, Kyocera Communications recycled 95.2 percent of the waste it generated, including paper, plastic, electronic and other waste materials otherwise destined for landfills.
