TOKYO, July 23 (Reuters) - Japan's Kyocera Corp (Tokyo:6971.T - News), the world's largest maker of the ceramic packages that house microchips, has set a long-term target of boosting group sales to 2 trillion yen ($18.24 billion), the company's president told business daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun.

In an interview with the newspaper published on Friday, Kyocera President Yasuo Nishiguchi said the company would bolster its mainstay products and invest in new businesses to achieve that target.
The sales target represents a 59 percent increase over the company's forecast of group revenues of 1.26 trillion yen in the business year to March 2005.
Nishiguchi also said Kyocera would aim for a pre-tax profit margin of 20 percent over the long term. That is about double its forecast for the 2004/05 business year.
Nishiguchi did not say when the company expected to hit these targets, but he said dates could be set later this year after discussions with the firm's various business groups.
In addition to ensuring steady growth in its mainstay business areas including ceramic-related products, electronic device-related products and communications equipment, Nishiguchi said he would look for new ways to achieve growth.
"I want to foster new businesses," Nishiguchi said, noting that the company was preparing for a fully fledged entry into the fuel-cell battery and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) businesses.
Nishiguchi also said Kyocera would pursue mergers and acquisitions if that would help competitiveness. ($1=109.67 Yen)
