The Canon imageRunner 8500 is a high-volume digital production system. With its 85 page per-minute speed and 400,000 page a month duty cycle, the 8500 is designed to meet the demands of high-volume copying and distributed printing. The 105 is nearly identical machine but has a 105 page per minute speed and a duty cycle of 600,000 pages a month.

Both the 8500 and the 105 ship standard as digital copiers, but each can be easily upgraded to deliver network printing and scanning capabilities. Each offers a 100 Sheet Auto Doc Feeder, Trayless Duplexing, a large 7,650 sheet paper capacity, 2400 x 600 dpi interpolated printing resolution, and a wide range of finishing capabilities. These systems offer solutions that are proving very popular in the print-for-pay and print-on-demand markets.

Both systems are small, much smaller then their analog predecessors. Before accessories are added, the main units measure approx. 45 inches high by 31 inches wide and 32 inches deep. All trays handle paper weights from 17lbs to 110 lb index. Three different finishers are available for each unit: the K1 which offers basic stapling and offset stacking, the K2 which adds hole punching (2-hole, 3-hole) to the k1's capabilities, and the K3 which adds folding (v fold) and saddle stitching (for 11 x 17 sheets to 81/2 x 11 booklets). An additional folding unit, C1, will Z-Fold 11 x 17 sheets. Two other popular options include a side paper deck for up to 3,500 letter-size sheets, and a document insertion unit, B!, that allows pre-printed stock to be merged with finished documents post-process. For the 105 a booklet trimmer is available (trims booklets up to 60 pages).

For connectivity, an optional Network PDL printer kit (B1) is available for each ubit, offering connections to all major networks and platforms (PC & MAC). PDL support includes PCL and PS3 emulation. In addition, and external imagePASS M1 stand alone print controller (Pentium III, adobe PS3) is an option for the higher speed imageRUNNER 105.
