In the future, a copierservice.mobi domain?
What copier service tech doesn't carry a cell phone or a handheld computer? And wouldn't it be handy to pop out the device and surf for parts and specs on the Web?
But using mobile devices for such purposes isn't easy in a widescreen-dominated world.
Now the new Internet-capable mobile phones are scheduled to receive their own domain - the .mobi domain - by the summer of 2006.
The .mobi domain will indicate that the content is geared to mobile devices, which is expected to stimulate usage of cell phones and other mobile devices on the Internet.
There will be a 90-day honeymoon period for registered brand owners to register their claim to .mobi site addresses. Such common names as" travel.mobi" or other generic names will be auctioned by mTLD Top Level Domain, which administrates the domain.
mTLD Top Level Domain was formed by Microsoft, Nokia, the Global System for Mobile Communications Association, Vodafone Group and others, and has a contract with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to create the .mobi domain.
