Feds say don’t use Chinese hardware

The US Department of Homeland Security published a “business advisory” warning US customers against using hardware created or linked to Chinese companies

  • FBI is investigating more than 1,000 cases of data theft by Chinese government
  • Claims that Chinese designed products could contain backdoors or hidden data collection mechanisms accessible by Chinese hackers
  • “Any person or entity that chooses to procure data services and equipment from PRC-linked firms, or store data on software or equipment developed by such firms, should be aware of the economic, reputational, and, in certain instances, legal, risks associated with doing business with these firms.”
  • Wonder how Lexmark feels about this

“FBI is investigating more than 1,000 cases of data theft by Chinese government”

Art, has the FBI released the RESULTS of one “investigation”? I have difficulty believing anything until RESULTS provide PROOF.

also, while I’m certain that data theft does occur, I’d like proof that data theft resulted from spy chips in copier/printers.

thanks and regards,

Joel

HI Joel

Thanx for the comment!

I just re-post some of the items that I read.  I do find it interesting that "spy chips" are our there.  Seeing that Toshiba investing dollars into developing a system that will detect spy chips tells me that there is a need for detection.

It reminds me of the a copier story from the 60's when Xerox and the US Secret Service had technicians install cameras in Xerox copiers.  Those copiers were delivered to the Soviet Union Embassy in Washington, DC.

When routine or schedule maintenance was needed the technician would remove and replace the film.  It's my understanding that every document that was copied was also captured on film.

We may find it hard to believe that their could be "spy chips" in those electronic devices, but I think clients need to be aware of the risks of installing Chinese manufactured devices on their network.
