Raleigh, NC – July 16, 2024 ExactCODE GmbH, TWAIN Working Group Board Member and leading innovator in scanner and embedded software technologies, announces the launch of TWAIN Direct and Cloud RISC-V software stack aimed at reducing costs and enhancing functionality for network-connected scanners.

TWAIN Direct, a new standard for connecting scanners to applications without needing driver installations, simplifies the user experience and reduces deployment complexity. It enables seamless integration of scanners into various applications and environments, ensuring compatibility and ease of use across different platforms.

RISC-V, an open-standard instruction set processor architecture (ISA) known for its simplicity and power efficiency, is revolutionizing the computing industry. Unlike proprietary ISAs, RISC-V is royalty free and open-source, promoting innovation and collaboration across diverse computing applications.

In addition to TWAIN Direct, ExactCODE GmbH introduces RISC-V support, leveraging the power-efficient RISC-V architecture to deliver cost-effective and scalable solutions for modern scanners. This technology brings modern, TWAIN Direct based scanners to cheaper RISCV SoCs, and thus more affordable entry-level scanners for portable, driver-less scanning from mobile to cloud solutions.

"We are excited to bring TWAIN Direct and Cloud for RISC-V to the market, addressing the growing demand for affordable, network-connected scanners," said René Rebe, CEO of ExactCODE GmbH. "These innovations underscore our commitment to providing cutting-edge solutions that empower businesses to streamline their scanning processes while minimizing costs."

Stated Joseph Odore, TWAIN Working Group Chairperson, “It’s exciting to see the TWAIN Direct protocol integrated into the RISC-V architecture, this illustrates the ease and flexibility of the TWAIN Direct standard” said Joseph Odore, Board Chair of TWAIN Working Group. “The added support with the RISC-V architecture expands the use and adoption of TWAIN Direct, allowing developers to support the needs of any organization’s operating environment.”

The integration of TWAIN Direct and Cloud RISC-V by ExactCODE GmbH marks a significant milestone in the evolution of scanner technology, offering:

  • Cost Efficiency: Reduced deployment and maintenance costs with TWAIN Direct's driverless scanning technology.
  • Performance: Enhanced scanning performance and energy efficiency with RISC-V's scalable architecture.
  • Compatibility: Seamless integration across diverse platforms and applications, ensuring compatibility and ease of use.

About The TWAIN Working Group

The TWAIN Working Group, established in 1992, is a not-for-profit association of industry leaders who have gathered to create a standard that benefits the imaging industry as a whole. TWAIN's purpose is to provide and foster a universal public standard which links applications and image acquisition devices. The ongoing mission of this organization is to continue to enhance the standard to accommodate future technologies. TWAIN generates multiple opportunities for application developers and users to access information and broaden the standard; through a developer’s forum, main website and online self-certification process. Current members of the TWAIN Working Group include ExactCODE GmbH, JSE Imaging Solutions, P3iD Technologies, Inc., PFU America Inc., Kodak Alaris, InoTec – a Datawin GmbH brand, Plustek, Inc., Atalasoft, Microtek, Inc., Dynamsoft, Epson America, Inc., LEAD Technologies and Hewlett Packard, along with Liaison Partners PDF Association and AIIM International. More information about TWG Developers Day participation and sponsorship, PDF/R, the TWAIN Direct API and imaging standards can be obtained at pdfraster.org, twain.org and twaindirect.org.
