- Caesars admitted that it paid a multi-million dollar ransom to hackers
- The Health Sector Cybersecurity Coordination Center is warning U.S. healthcare facilities of new ransomware attack named “Akira”, demanding ransoms up to $4 million apiece.
- IT Governance Solutions reported results of research:
- From 1/1/23 to 8/1/23 there were 694 publicly reported cyberattacks worldwide involving 612,368,642 breached records
- Largest breach was Twitter (kna “X”) were 220 million records exposed
- OrthoVirginia announced that it did NOT pay the ransom after it was hit by hackers, and after 18 months, has recovered all of its data.
- Microsoft announced it issued updates to fix 98 different security vulnerabilities in its software.
- Prospect Medical Holdings apparently has already lost $1.3 million after its 16 hospitals were hit with Rhysida ransomware.
- Police arrested Nora Avila in Laredo, TX after she allegedly impersonated a nurse for several home health agencies in the area, illegally accessing the PHI of an unknown number of patients.
- Maksim Galochkin was arrested for his alleged involvement in the ransomware attack on Scripps Health of San Diego, CA.
- Box Butte General Hospital of Nebraska notified an unknown number of patients that their PHI was exposed after cyber attack.
- LA Care of Los Angeles, CA paid $1.3 million to settle HIPAA violation charges after breaches exposed almost 2,000 patients’ PHI.
- Kaiser Permanente Health agreed to pay $49 million to settle HIPAA violation charges with State o California after it was found to have illegally disposed of PHI in dumpsters.
