A few resources for you as you spend your charitable dollars this season....

http://www.anysoldier.com/ Website links you with a deployed soldier with requests from the soldier. A great way to show your support for the troops!

Most of the requests are for simple items such as granola bars and gatorade, though they generally wouldn't say no to a DVD or something.

http://www.charitynavigator.org/ Website that shows you how much of the dollar you give to a charity actually goes toward what you gave it for.

My favorite example: Firefighters Charitable Foundation. 83 cents of every dollar you give goes toward FUNDRAISING. Another 5.7 cents goes toward administrative costs, leaving just 11 cents of every dollar to actually support Fire Fighters.

Suggestion: If you want to help the Fire Fighters, go by the station and drop off a $20.

http://www.thehungersite.com/ Website that provides free food to the hungry among other things. Just visiting the site allows for the donation of free food, without you having to buy anything!

You can also make a purchase and a portion of that will go to help others, or make a charitable purchase (Pay a teacher's salary in Afghanistan, Malaria nets, etc.).

I know it's hard to believe something as wonderful as the Hunger Site is actually not a scam, so here is the Snopes page verifying that it's real and actually does what it says. http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/charity/hungersite.asp

”I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare…If our charities do not at all pinch or hamper us,… they are too small. There ought to be things we should like to do and cannot do because our charitable expenditures excludes them.”

Here's one more with an interesting angle. Unfortunately, they are only focused on one state currently but I imagine they will grow over time.

What they do:

"We work closely with case managers to find families who can truly benefit from a one-time charitable donation. Hardworking members of the community who find themselves in a difficult position: one step away from homelessness, but more importantly, one urgent payment away from getting back on their feet."

How you help:

"This is where you come in. When you lend your support to a family in need – whether it’s $3 or $300 – 100% of every penny you give goes directly toward addressing a specific family need. No middlemen. No hidden costs. No time wasted. Just an uplifting, tax-deductible gift that goes to a landlord, utility company or hospital awaiting payment."
May I put in a plug for my personal cause?

As a volunteer at our county's animal shelter, I see first hand the good work this shelter does(as well as all the others around the country). There are so many wonderful, wonderful pets languishing in kennels that are simply awaiting a chance to have a home of their own with a loving family.

People can be so incredibly cruel to animals. I can't begin to tell you how many of our "strays" were really dumped off on the side of the road by somebody who stopped caring.

The shelters are stretched very thin especially this year for resources. More people have had to surrender their pets because of their economic circumstances. It breaks your heart to see a "new dog" trembling with fear in the corner of their kennel at all the strange sights and sounds, waiting futilely for their person to come back and rescue them. How very very sad for both person and pet.

The shelters do a good job of caring of these animals until they "get to go home." It has been my priviledge as a dog walker to get to temporarily love and play with dozens of really great pooches.

Please consider donating to your local animal shelter. Even just a bag of dog food or your old blankets would help enormously.
