A car crashed through the entrance of a UPS store late Tuesday morning when the driver's foot slipped off his brake and stepped on the gas pedal, Salem Police said.

Cpl. Jim Welsh said the driver, Jason Pate, 36, wasn't influenced by medical or alcohol issues; it was simply a driver error.

No one was injured and no citations were issued.
The store front, at Lancaster Drive NE and Market Street NE, was significantly damaged, with its glass door and windows shattered and the metal frames bent out of shape.

Employee Tony Meyer said the car hit a copier at the entrance of the store but he wasn't sure of the extent of the damage.

"It's just fortunate no one was in front of him," Welsh said.

Two UPS employees and two customers were in the store at the time of the crash, Meyer said.
Meyer was helping a customer when he heard a loud bang at 11:30 a.m., he said. He said he looked over just in time to see the car drive into the store.

"After that it was pure shock," Meyer said.
