Reuters) - Canon Inc will spend about 25 billion yen to streamline its design and product data systems in the company in 2010 and expects savings of more than 100 billion yen over three years, the Nikkei business daily reported.
The electronics manufacturer will consolidate its two 3-D CAD (computer-aided design) systems as well as standardize those for managing product data, the newspaper said.
The Nikkei also said a production data system that handles output, orders and other information will be streamlined and adopted in 25 locations at home and abroad.
Data for design and development will be shared among divisions overseeing production preparations, prototypes and output control, it said adding that the efficient use of 3-D data will reduce trial production and shorten development times.
Canon will streamline maintenance and operation of its systems as well, the newspaper said.
With more than 90 percent of system development to take place in-house, the firm will be able to perform necessary upgrades and cut costs, it added.
