Canon To Boost Copier Line In U.S., Europe

Canon plans to expand its lineup of multi-function color copiers in the U.S. and Europe in an attempt to seize the top share in the global market for color-capable office equipment, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported, without citing sources.

The company plans by June to sell in the U.S. and Europe low-, medium- and high-speed models of its color-capable digital copiers, which offer network connectivity and a host of copier and printer functions, the newspaper reported.
By expanding its offerings, Canon (nyse: CAJ - news - people ) hopes to boost the figure to roughly 30% in the financial year to December 2005. In Japan, color-capable models account for about 40% of its multi-function copier sales, the report said.
In 2003, worldwide sales of multi-function color copiers are estimated to have grown around 40% to slightly less than 300,000 units. With increasing use of color documents and transmission via the Internet in the U.S. and Europe, sales are forecast to grow at a similar rate in 2004, the report said.
Canon has set a goal of boosting sales of color products to more than 50% of its sales of office equipment in 2005, the report said.
