New Windows-Powered Network Print Appliance Designed to Simplify Network Administration While Enhancing Workflow of Print Devices

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 14, 2003-- In addressing the growing need of corporations to install and manage network printers with greater ease and efficiency across their enterprises, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a subsidiary of Canon Inc. (NYSE: CAJ - News), today introduces the Canon Print Server Appliance (PSA), a Windows-Powered Network Print Appliance based on Windows 2000 with the Server Appliance Kit, as the resident operating system.
The Canon Print Server Appliance (PSA) is a 1U Rack Mount turnkey server appliance that offloads the printing function from a general purpose server, thereby increasing overall network performance and printer availability uptime. IT Managers can use the appliance for near-zero configuration and installation of up to 50 digital copiers and printers on the network, while also gaining control of device drivers that end-users can install on their clients through a clear, single-click process. Comprehensive print queue management with auto device discovery and queue control, and automatic status alerts ensure that IT personnel are focusing on issues of greater importance on the network.

"Canon is pleased to work closely with Microsoft in delivering the new Canon Print Server Appliance, a product that will foster growth opportunities for both companies in the network print appliance market," said Tod Pike, senior vice president of Marketing, Canon U.S.A. Imaging Systems Group. "Through the delivery of this Windows-Powered Network Print Appliance, customers will be able to maximize the capabilities of Windows 2000 with the Server Appliance Kit to facilitate the more effective administration and management of printer devices across networks."

"Microsoft is extremely pleased to see Canon, as a leading provider of network print technology, choose Windows 2000 with the Server Appliance Kit for its first Windows-Powered Network Print Appliance," said Todd Warren, general manager of the Embedded and Appliance Platforms Group at Microsoft Corp. "Windows 2000 with the Server Appliance Kit provides a powerful and robust platform that has enabled Canon to develop a Network Print Server that can be easily configured, deployed and maintained from any remote workstation."

The Canon Print Server Appliance, developed in the United States by Canon Development Americas, is the first product under Canon's Enterprise Services Platform(TM), which represents a family of hardware and software solutions that are designed specifically to improve the way in which organizations manage their network printing and copying needs. The Enterprise Services Platform (ESP) is based on a Canon developed modular open systems technology that is highly scalable and can grow along with the enterprise. ESP was designed in such a way that both hardware and software components can plug into the underlying architecture. Once the core technology is placed into an organization, as in the case of the Canon Print Server Appliance, additional ESP-based software applications that each in their own right can provide valuable, time-saving benefits, can easily be added.

The Canon Print Server Appliance is available today through all authorized Canon U.S.A. Dealers and Canon Business Solutions locations. Suggested Retail Pricing for the appliance, including first year software telephone support and hardware exchange is $2,995.00. Extended hardware and software support options are also available.
