Art,

First I have to say that "The Smithsonian" called and they are looking for that machine. LOL!

Having said that, trying to get a Canon CLC to print on any heavy stock is difficult at best, because it uses a transfer drum that the paper has to attach itself to and then it travels around 4 times around, once for each color. The fact that the paper was stuck to a drum really helped registration but it doomed the CLC because it could NEVER get heavy paper to consistently wrap around the transfer drum.I sold these when I was a Color Sales Specialist, and we would often sell the new (at that time) C3200 in combination with the CLC so that our P4Pay customers could get the high end color of the CLC and the heavier stock of the C3200.

The BEST thing you can do is either set the expectations of the customer correctly - The CLC will NEVER do heavy stock well, or try to replace the CLC with a modern one that will handle much heavier stock. There are many great devices today that will do really heavy stock, up to 300gms.

The key to winning the business is how much quality are they willing to pay for? We sell both Canon & Konica Minolta. Hands down the best color on really heavy stock is the Canon ImagePRESS, so you would think that we sell more of those than the Konica Minolta digital Press, but we sell more KM Presses because the cost of the Canon ImagePRESS is significantly more, and the KM Press quality is good (not as good as the Canon) but for the price it offers a great value.

Years ago we sold both Fiery & ColorBus Rips for our production level CLCs (1000 - 5100s). I was able to develop a custom NECS color curve for the ColorBus rip that made it look very close to the Fiery. Now the Fiery Rip on the same engine did look better. The Fiery also cost $10K more than the ColorBus. So we would show samples from both rips to our customers. And they would compare and contrast them. To a person they would say that the Fiery looked better. Then I would ask the critical question...

Does it look $10,000.00 better?

We sold a lot of ColorBus rips!

Best of luck!
Vince
