A campus alert was released today about a possible scam related to departmental printers and copiers.
According to a campus update email sent today, numerous reports on campus have been made about calls received from potential scammers asking for model numbers from departmental printers and copiers.
The scenario was described as the caller saying he or she wants to verify some information. The department is then asked for the model of its printer or copier. If the caller is asked by the department what company they work for or other details, the caller hangs up.
The campus alert said that if someone in the department does provide the caller with a model number, the department could be charged significant prices for toner that might or might not be received.
The University has a contract with ComDoc for its printers and copiers. This arrangement means the toner is provided free of charge.
The campus alert recommends that if anyone in a department receives a call about information for a printer or copier, the person should refer the caller to the purchasing department at 419-372-8411. No information to should be provided to the caller. For more information about the possible scam, contact the purchasing department.
