Bytes Document Solutions, authorised Xerox distributor, showcased three newly launched Xerox printing machines at the Africa Print road show, which was held recently at the ICC in Durban.

The expo covered the entire digital print process and included suppliers and manufacturers of commercial and digital printers, finishing equipment, software, media and consumables.

The largest of the Xerox machines on show was the Xerox Color 1000 five-colour digital press. “Visitors to the show were impressed with its superior quality and the optional fifth print station, which allows users to apply a clear dry ink,” says Paul Haglich, marketing manager of the production systems group in the Xerox division at Bytes Document Solutions.

“This new clear ink technology is applied in one pass, producing similar effects to spot or flood UV varnish and amplifies full-colour jobs. Applying the clear toner layer does not slow down the printer output speed and is easily selected on a page-by-page basis.”

The clear, dry ink allows for images and text to be highlighted for visual impact, or digital watermarks to be applied for artistic effect or security. It also displays personalised content in more vivid ways. The high-volume devices are designed for commercial and in-plant print operations, as well as marketing communications firms.

“The image quality of applications coming off these new presses is superb,” says Haglich. “Print providers want to increase the worth of every page they sell, and the clear, dry ink delivers. It adds vibrancy, quality and value. It's the perfect machine for companies that want to grow their share of the short-run, quick turnaround market. The Xerox 1000 can print up to 100 A4 pages per minute (ppm).”

Also on show was the entry-level light production Xerox 550 colour copier / printer, targeted at quick-print shops, small commercial printers, in-plant operations, advertising agencies, creative shops and office settings.

“The Xerox 550 lets users produce a wide range of applications and enables them to meet customer demands in high-quality colour and black and white,” says Haglich.

Marketing materials, photo speciality items, office documents and PowerPoint presentations can be produced on the Xerox Color 550 at 50 colour ppm or 55 ppm in black and white. It can also be utilised as a high-quality proofing device in a commercial print shop.

The third machine on display was the Xerox 4127, a mono copier / printer that is built for production and is aimed at high-volume transactional printing with a speed of 125 ppm.

“The high print resolution prints finer lines, crisp text, half tones and deep, solid blacks, for a polished, professional finish,” says Haglich. “Users can also print just about anything, from booklets, manuals and presentations, to transactional workflows including monthly statements and invoices. They can also give documents a professional finish with the optional booklet maker, trimmer, punch and stacker. The 4127 can also be used to scan hardcopy documents to e-mail, a network PC or a secure mailbox that can be accessed by authorised users via passwords.

Bytes Document Solutions also demoed Silverline's web2print, a Web-based print solution that provides a comprehensive set of tools to create, submit and manage print jobs online. It allows commercial printers and in-house print facilities to use the benefits of the Web within the print environment.

“web2print is a prepress process that allows a print house and its clients to create, edit and approve computer-based online templates during the prepress phase,” says Haglich. “It's targeted at commercial users who can access public or private online storefronts or catalogues offered by print houses for products like business cards, brochures and stationery.”
