(Fox 25/MyFoxBoston.com) - The disgraced former Somerville politician who was convicted of stealing cash from the city will now begin collecting his pension.
In 2008, John Buonomo was the Middlesex County register of probate when he was arrested for stealing more than $100,000 in campaign funds and stealing thousands from copy machines inside the Office of Deeds.
Buonomo, who was caught on camera stealing from the copy machines, pleaded guilty and is serving a 2 ½ year prison sentence after being convicted on 39 counts of theft, misuse of campaign funds and other charges.
A judge says because his conviction happened after his retirement, Buonomo is eligible to receive his pension.
The Somerville Retirement Board has been fighting the decision since January of this year, but Wicked Local - Somerville reports that a judge threatened to fine the city $100 a day if they did not begin paying Buonomo his $30,000 a year pension.
The board believed that they were required by law to revoke his public pension.
Buonomo resigned from his position in September 2008.
