Recent Report Calls Large Format a "Bright Spot"

According to a recent report by TrendWatch Graphic Arts, large-format printers are one of the bright spots in the graphic arts industries, showing consistent and steady growth as a planned investment. The report presents a detailed summary of trends affecting the graphic arts industries in the last seven years, a time of tremendous technological evolution and change in the marketplace. The report compares, contrasts and charts data to illustrate key market trends in the graphic arts, and how they've developed.

Highlights of the report also include:

Prepress-related processes are declining as opportunities, thus these services have become commodities, causing printers and service bureaus to now look elsewhere and create new profit centers and competitive differentiators.

Concern about "increasing plant productivity" is on the decline, thus suppliers trying to sell equipment on the basis of incremental productivity improvements need to change their message;

Concern about "keeping up with technological change" is also on the decline, so shops no longer see the need to acquire the latest and the greatest in order to be competitive;

Prepress-related processes like preflighting, working with PC files, and PDF workflow are sharply declining.

"Increasing sales personnel" is decreasing as a sales opportunity at the same time that "working with print brokers" and "partnering with other graphic arts firms" is on the rise. When it comes to increasing sales, printers are starting to adopt the "no overhead" option.

TrendWatch Graphic Arts releases Wide Format Report
Research firm TrendWatch Graphic Arts recently released its report on the large-format graphics industry, and presents some interesting findings.

"The growth of wide-format printing in the creative markets is either a good or bad notion depending upon your viewpoint," said Vince Naselli, Director, and TrendWatch Graphic Arts. "If you’re an equipment manufacturer, you couldn’t be happier at this prospect. If you’re a creative professional, every new sales opportunity is a blessing. But, if you’re a print provider, you may not be thrilled about your clients and suppliers buying their own equipment. Look for finishing services to make up for some of this lost work. Finishing is one arena most would rather leave to the printers, so they may not be losing as much business as they thought."

Highlights Include

Among creative professionals, commercial photographers reported the highest interest in wide-format printers with 11% planning to buy in the next 12 months.

Overall, the most likely to purchase in the next 12 months were: Prepress Firms (14%), Quick Printers (13%) and Commercial Printers (10%).
Our dealership has just taken on a couple of color wide format products from Oce. The Arizona solvent ink system for lowres outdoor graphics and the 9055, an 8 head conventional inkjet for highres indoor graphics. One of the apps. for the Arizona is the car wrap graphics you probably see as well as other vehicle graphics.
