I just received this email from JR in reference to my question.

Sorry could not find a specific post so here is how I would attack the KIP, presumably the 3000, with the 240W. The KIP 2000/6000/7000/8000 are totally different than the 3000.

1) Spool Feed Roll instead of Flange inserts
2) Only one exit source at the bottom, not the 2 Ricoh offers.
Kip, however offers a stacker option.
3) Scanning is done by mail boxes only. The user selects or
creates the mail box (up to 999 mailboxes can be active, scans the document, then retrieves it using the KIP Powerprint Request Software.

Hope this helps.
Overall, the Ricoh Response is quite good. There are a couple of answers I would take issue with.

Rant:
“The software is also very difficult to use and non-intuitive”
Reality:
Subjectively speaking, it would seem logical that a time tested mature product will be most versatile as well as easy and reliable to operate.

Um, have you actually used the software? I agree that anyone who is technically proficient can stumble through it and get what they want in the end. However, it is not "user friendly".

Every time I have to tell my customer that the "scan" button in that green box with the red arrow pointing at it, I cringe. MANY of my customers have complained about this.

Rant:
“The Ricoh software cannot be set-up as an IP based printing device. It uses hot folders which are a security problem on networks.”

The response on this one is OK but... did you know you can print directly to the IP of a PC sharing a printer? So technically, you can print direct to IP to the plotbase PC. Of course it uses a "hot folder" to accomplish this, but why does it matter?

Rant:
“Passive accounting within the software. The user is not forced to put in any information for accounting purposes if they choose not to.”

Reality:
All plotting to the RW-240 can be tracked with the administratively controlled accounting function

Erm, have you seen the accounting? let me ask, when I print with the windos print driver, how do I enter this info? Oh what's that? I can't enter the info? Ah... not at all? nope. The accouting only tracks accounting data for prints, and ONLY when sent through plotbase.

Here are some more points to hammer home;

  • FPOT 24 seconds
  • warmup 5 minutes
  • Rear exit only, looks the same as the 240W, if thats the case the customer will have continous misfeed problems with long paper
  • No preview of scans
  • No editing of scans
  • Spindle load for paper, KIP outlines 15 steps to replace the paper roll! (ouch), Plus you must have a flat surface available to replace the roll, well that means an empty table or the floor (ouch)
  • Toner replacement, 10 steps to repalce the toner! Plus the cartridges are 1/2 the size of the Ricoh ( I am double checking this )
  • No Paper Tray
  • Before using the by-pass you must first configure the paper size (ouch)
  • No clamshell access for misfeeds, bad jams may need a tech on-site (ouch)
  • No program modes, I have found that msot companies will pre-program reductions and enlargements and other time saving steps with the Ricohs. After reading the OP manual, I did not see any program modes for the KIP.
  • Space (WxDxH) 49x24x44, unit is wider than the 240W, plus with only having rear access the system must be spaced further away from the wall than the 240W. Most of my customers use the top exit tray
