well, you can go to a MS-DOS prompt and type

tracert <insert your SMTP server IP address here>

This will tell you the name of the server associated with that IP address (assuming you have DNS setup and the server does not block ICMP requests).

Technically if the IP address he gave you is actually the correct IP address for his SMTP server, then there is no difference between using the IP and the name (as long as the IP is static).

When I'm having trouble getting scan to email to work, I always sit down at a computer on their network (or attach my Laptop) and set it up with the information they provided. If Outlook can't connect to the server with the provided information, the customer is much more accepting that they've given me the wrong information.
1515s are designed to work with a fixed ip on the internal mail server. If your customer doesnt have their own server, this is the price they must pay.
I mean, I know we have to make deals but if you let the coustomer make the rules, you will lose.
This is like owning a business and letting your customers or your employees make the rules.
