I am seeing more of that with wide format recently and I am not sure why. Most of what I have seen has been where they are running the same volume as before but they just don't want to have a machine anymore so they outsource it and it doesn't seem to matter if the machine was leased to them for a $1 a month they still wouldn't do it.

Its pretty strait forward. Default the scanner to Store File to HDD. At the PC create a desktop shortcut to Web Image Monitor. Have customer click on Print Job/Store File -------> Document server. They will be able to download the document. The real problem though is you are encountering a lazy IT guy. Any IT guy worth his salt will help you set up scan to folder.

Interesting thoughts, Thank you p4p. I have sold Canon for 20+ years. Many years ago they listed the imageClass line (MFP's under 2,500 dollars) and the entire scanning line and Wide Format line. As such I stopped selling those products as I have always been compensated on hardware gross profit and there was none. In 10 years there WILL be outside sales reps, and many of them will be the committed, true professionals of today. The E-Commence platform have changed our business and how we do it. For example gone are the days when you could duck into a 15 story office building and cold call. But electronic format can still be your attention getter and facilitate your efforts in creating interest. I can buy anything on line and cut out the sales person. I’m a little late to this party but had the thread open since it was posted. As a 35 year old i straddle the “millennial” and old school gap (in my opinion haha). There is value of ordering things online that can be commonly used or even basic electronics. John, The PrintCopy Tool compares pretty favorably to Plotworks. I attached two documents to this post. The Product Support Guide lists differences between the two products. The PowerPoint has screen shots of all the settings in PrintCopy Tool. I hope this helps.

They are never going to get their act together. I spoke with Jim Corridi at the CDA meeting several months ago and he told me big things were coming down the pipeline very soon because he agreed it would be hard to upgrade 3406WD systems with a 3406WD system. He also, however, acted like the Epson was going to be the latest and greatest thing for all of us that sell wide format. Not sure why since we don't typically mess with the ink jet machines. The "big things" was hopefully not a teaser to keep dealers on board for wide format. Still, the only two I know about are the higher end wf's and not the W3601 series, anyone hear anything else?

Jason, Talk to KIP again I have never heard of KIP asking dealers to stock machines(maybe one for the demo floor). Plus KIP is releasing the new 800 series next month and these machines look like they should be good sellers. 8 full color "D"s per minute and 10K less that the Oce colorwave. We sell or have sold all the major lines of wide format, KIP, Oce, Ricoh, even going back to Xerox. All our sales reps and techs prefer the KIPs. GR

Wide Format is in a big transition right now, I know KIP is no longer going to be putting any R&D into monochrome printing anymore. Its all color from this point forward, I know Oce (or CSA) is thinking the same way. I can't speak for Ricoh but at this point why would you put any money into it. Ink jet is not the answer ether so the Epson deal in not going to get you into too many doors. If the KIP 800 series is priced right (somewhere in the $25K-30K area) a lot of them will be going...

The Epson argument has been going on for years. I brought one product in as a complement product and direct print production sales fought for Epson devices as part of the portfolio. I wouldn't allow it. However, with Vellek in charge of all product marketing, a lot changed. Overall profitability on Epson to Ricoh is about 7-9%. Plus there is no way to lock a customer into a toner inclusive deal when they could by it anywhere on the web. Losing proposition for Ricoh, winning for Epson. I ran...

We don't sell the Epson, I do hear that many Ricoh wide format dealers are looking to change. The W3602 is due out something this spring, Ricoh is waiting to exhaust inventories on the W3601. I have not sold a W3601 yet this year and believe I only sold a handful last year, I used to sell at least a dozen a year. The W3602 will have the GUI as the color systems and many of the same features, sad but the GUI and the MFP features will still put us way behind with the likes of KIP & Oce

So some clarification first. PaperCut absolutely does support Mac. In fact, it is the only cost recovery/print control solution that I know of that actually installs in an all Mac environment. (Server and Client) It also is the only solution I know of that installs in a Linux environment. So both of your issues are solved with PaperCut. I included the install guides for Mac and Linux to get you started.

Wow the OKI wide formats! Haven't run across any of these yet. I do remember that Oki bought a minor wide format player a number of years ago. So, the Oki or Teriostar 1040 is one page per minute faster than the Ricoh. Oki wants the user to replace the corona wire cartridge and the process cartridge. I believe the process cartridge is the drum. Now, the memories come back, if an end user scratches that drum, it's on the user to replace the drum which is going to be a very pricey item. If I was a business owner I would not want my peeps handling a part that has a cost of $1,500-$2,000. If they scratch it, it's on me to buy another,...

Old Glory I agree!! Solutions take longer, I've been working on a secure print solution for almost 4 months. I'm lucky if the deal will top 40K and even luckier if I get the deal. I've tried to focus on higher end hardware and multiple units. The multiple units is tough because everyone is involved and margins are so so at best. MY only saving grace has been the wide format stuff.

I am having trouble scanning to Vista with the 816mf and it doesn't even need ScanRouter, it is serverless. I posted the problem and got some helpful info as you have about possible firewall or antivirus interference. I also heard that you must set a password in Vista for shared folder - no choice - but I am not sure if that is true yet, need to get back to the customer's office soon to check. Also was told Vista Home was not scanner friendly but there was no explaination for that.

Ouch, that's a tough one. If it's really a proprietary system, there's probably no chance of a converter being available. What's the actual file format? Does it save in an an autocad format? or HPGL? Secondly, why do you need it to be PDF? If it's for printing to a ricoh wide format, could they use a PDF print driver to drop the file into a folder for the Rioch to grab it from?

Jason -- no the goal it to print a version of an 11 x 17 drawing and scale down to a letter size document. My PCL and PS3 driver is not reading the lines on the drawing as an image. I posted for a colleague so who just joined so I am not sure of the file format, nor am I familiar w/ this application. 2nd part yes -- they could do that -- that was a quick work around that we did - but was unhappy with the amount of clicks that it had to go through. They have a CANON that does it no problem.

Here's part of the confusion, this is posted in the wrong forum. This forum is for Industry wide announcements. If you had it in the forum for Ricoh issues, that'd have told us more about what type of issue you were working on. RATIO is the company that makes the controllers/software for the Ricoh wide-format, so not an issue in this case.

I don't believe you can use the Ratio Scantool without PB. Why can't you use the W5100 with the GW Scanner. I think this is all you need. Also, the WFCS is on the GSA Contract dated July 29, 2009. The product code is 100117FNG for $6,500. You need the "software key" that will allow you to utilize the scanner without having a Ricoh WF attached on the network. The product code is 100257FNG, $4,500 MSRP and the launch date should have been the end of October.

GIntel did a good job of summarizing the list. It seems to be a good fit for Canon. They gain additional distribution in 32 countries, add what is arguably the BEST wide-format and production print engine producer and it only costs them $1.1B? Nice Job.

Strengthens Canon in Europe But not a large change in USA. Canon Production and wide format business impacted the most. Xerox may see an opportunity in high end

Just installed the 9700 today at a client site today and it is amazing. Kicks out D size full color plots with full coverage in about 45 seconds, and they were beautiful. Love the flanges for the paper rolls in the fact that they are adjustable for either 2" or 3". Best part about the unit was the ease of setup and use of this system. Very happy to have this as part of the lineup I can offer, and not have to give my leads to my buddy who works for a competing large format dealership.

If you arrange to sell a new copier, replacing the current vendor plus arrange to ship the old copier back to the leasing company, who will likely resell it to a used copier broker and I do not know the service codes to format the HDD on the competititve box, who's responsibility is it to preserve the confidentiality of the customer's info?

Art, this is a serious issue. This is no different than hard drives in our computers, laptops, netbooks or anything that uses a HD. They are all storing electronic digital magnetic information. Those that have encryption are not safe if you know what you are doing. These encrypted containers can easily be tapped and opened. Here is a letter that management shared with us in our Monday morning sales meeting regarding the security of Ricoh hard drives. It is at least good to know that anything on the HDD is in a proprietary format. I don't think the difficult thing is going to be to make our RFG customers feel at ease that their data is not compromised. Simply handing over a copier's HDD removes the OS within the copier making it unuseable. Plus there is some labour to remove the HDD and reload the firmware onto it. At least $200 - $300.00 total vs turning on 128 Bit AES Encryption at the start - Free. Going forward, we format the HDD on all of our own brand copiers we remove. For competitors brands, where we do not know the Service Codes, we can only inform the customer of the risks.

I talked to an IT Manager today who told me that if you format a HDD immediately twice in a row, it effectively destroys all useable data on the HDD. Most HDs store data in two parts. The Security Key and the data. Some Data removal software programs only remove the security key. I am told this is like removing the Index from a book and scrambling up the book. The data is still there but needs to be rebuilt.
